BOSTON – In pursuit of claiming an all-important CAA road win, the Northeastern men's soccer team will venture to Elon on Saturday, Oct. 14, as the Huskies and the Phoenix meet in a 7 p.m. conference match at Rudd Field. NU enters the weekend three points behind the league's postseason zone, but can make up that ground by securing its first victory against Elon since the 2014 CAA quarterfinals.

Â
ALL-TIME AGAINST ELON
Â
Northeastern and Elon have met annually during the regular season since 2013, although the two programs have only squared off as members of the same conference since 2014. Entering Saturday, the Huskies trail the Phoenix, 1-3-1, in the all-time series, collecting their lone win during the 2014 CAA quarterfinals at Rudd Field (W, 2-0). NU has lost each of its previous two regular-season matches at Elon, despite holding a 1-0 lead against the 13th-ranked Phoenix on Oct. 7, 2015 (L, 1-2).
Â
LAST MEETING
Â
The Huskies statistically outperformed Elon during the two teams' Oct. 8 match at Parsons Field, but were unable to find the answer to Jack Willbye's unassisted set piece goal during the 36th minute as the Phoenix escaped with the 1-0 victory. Northeastern set a program series high with 16 shots and outgained Elon in corners, 7-3, winning four before halftime after conceding.
Jonathan Thuresson recorded six saves, while
Khori Bennett entered as a reserve and logged six attempts, two of which landed on goal.
Â
THE HUNT THROUGH OCTOBER
Â
NU finds itself immersed in the race for the 2017 CAA tournament (top six teams advance) with three conference matches remaining on its calendar. As of Oct. 13, five points separate the seven teams from third place to ninth with the Huskies (1-3-1 CAA, four points) slotted right in the mix, tied with Drexel (1-3-1 CAA, four points) for seventh place. Northeastern is pursuing its first trip to the CAA tournament since 2014.
Â
THURESSON ENTERS TOP 20 IN SAVES
Â
As of Oct. 13,
Jonathan Thuresson ranks 17th among NCAA Division I goalkeepers in total saves (56), averaging 4.31 per match – the second highest average in the CAA behind Drexel's Jacob Jordan (6.45).
Â
LEADING SCORERS
Harry Swartz will lead the Huskies' attack into Saturday's match against Elon. Swartz paces NU in goals (three), points (seven), shots (31), and shots on goal (11), averaging 77.3 minutes per start.Â
Martin Nygaard's penalty kick goal against William & Mary on Oct. 7 boosted his season's point count to four (two goals), whileÂ
Moustapha Samb (one goal, one assist) andÂ
Lewis Aird (three assists) sit in a tie for third on the squad in points, each with three apiece.
Â
NYGAARD: PERFECT ON PKs
Â
Junior backÂ
Martin Nygaard has made a name for himself this season as the Huskies' primary penalty kick taker. During Northeastern's Oct. 7 match against William & Mary, Nygaard approached the dot with 22 seconds remaining in regulation, burying his second penalty kick goal of the season by beating Phil Breno to the left post. Nygaard's first penalty kick goal of the year lifted NU to the 2-1 upset victory against No. 12 UMass Lowell during the 108th minute of the two teams' Sept. 9 match at Parsons Field, resulting in Nygaard's selection to College Soccer News' National Team of the Week (Sept. 10).
