CAA release
RICHMOND, Va. – After scoring the middle goal during the Northeastern men's soccer team's 3-2 victory against Vermont on Oct. 24, freshman forward
Dan Munch has been named CAA Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Â
Munch becomes the first Northeastern freshman to garner CAA Rookie of the Week distinction since the 2014 season, making him the first rookie recipient under second-year head coach
Chris Gbandi. The six-foot forward is the second NU player to be presented with a weekly award by the league this season, joining senior goalkeeper
Jonathan Thuresson, who took home CAA Player of the Week honors on Sept. 11 for his nine-save outing against No. 12 UMass Lowell.
Â
Exactly one week after scoring the first goal of his collegiate career – the equalizer during Northeastern's 1-1 draw against Boston University (Oct. 17) – Munch tallied his second on Tuesday night against Vermont, providing the Huskies with the go-ahead goal that broke the two teams' 1-1 tie during the 68th minute. Munch chipped in the deflection from
Khori Bennett's blocked shot at the top of the box, side-stepping the Catamounts' keeper to give NU its first lead of the match. He finished the night having registered three of the Huskies' 12 shot attempts and two of the team's six attempts on target.
Â
On Saturday, Munch was entrusted with the keys to Northeastern's late-match free kick against UNCW as the Huskies tried to overcome their 1-0 deficit on the road. Although unsuccessful, the rookie managed to produce a convincing attempt at the equalizing goal, nearly bringing the Huskies level with the Seahawks despite NU experiencing a double-digit shot deficit.
Â
Munch turned in five points during his rookie season at Northeastern, pairing his two goals with his Sept. 13 assist on
Moustapha Samb's strike against Harvard at Jordan Field. The Burlington, Massachusetts, native ranked second on the Huskies in both shots (34) and shots on goal (14) during the 2017 season, steering 41.2 percent of his total attempts on target. He also logged 974 minutes of action during his freshman campaign, ranking second among Northeastern's first-year corps behind left back
Dante Morrissette (1,272 minutes).
