BOSTON – In his first game as a Husky, Tomas Murphy helped the Northeastern basketball team to a 65-59 victory over Boston University in the season opener on Friday night at Case Gym.
Â
The rookie had a game-high 15 points and six rebounds in his Northeastern debut going 6-for-12 from the field with a pair of highlight reel dunks in the win. Three different Huskies tallied double-digit scoring on the night, led by Murphy, as
Devon Begley and
Anthony Green each added 10 points to the total. Begley added six assists while Green went 4-of-5 from the field on the night.
Â
BU was led by Cheddi Mosely who had 12 points on the night, including a three with time expiring in the second half, while Max Mahoney added 11 points and five rebounds and Cedric Hankerson had 10 points on the night.
Â
The Huskies improved to 7-1 in the last eight season openers against the Terriers and took the lead, 74-73, in the 147
th meeting between these two teams. Northeastern has now won seven of the last nine meetings with BU.
Â
Bill Coen, in his 12
th season as the leader of the Huskies, improved to 3-0 all-time at BU in season opening games.
Â
FIRST HALF
BU jumped out to a 12-4 lead through the first eight minutes of play behind a pair of baskets by Hankerson. But following the second media timeout, and the insertion of Derrick Cook into the ball game, Northeastern started its comeback going off on a 6-0 run behind a Murphy dunk and-one, his first collegiate points, and an Shawn Occeus trey from the corner to cut the Terrier lead to two with 10:25 remaining in the first half.
Â
After 6-4 Begley went up and stuffed 6-10 Sukhmail Mathon under the basket, BU picked up its eighth foul of the night which led to a pair of free throws for Bolden Brace who gave the Huskies' their first lead of the night at 17-16.
Â
An 8-0 run spurred by a couple of Green dunks, including an and-one, and a pair of Begley treys gave the Huskies their largest lead of the game, a nine-point, 28-19 advantage with just over four minutes to go.
Â
With the clock winding down and BU playing for the final shot, the Terriers turned the ball over with 6.7 seconds remaining as Tyler Scanlon set an illegal pick giving Coen a chance to call a timeout and set up one final play. Murphy made the most of it slamming home a dunk with time expiring as the Huskies finished the first stanza with a 35-26 lead.
Â
SECOND HALF
The two teams traded baskets to open the second frame with Maxime Boursiquot tallying the Huskies first three baskets of the stanza to head into the under-16 media with a 41-34 lead. Coming out of the break, Murphy drove along the baseline and looked like he was going up-and-under, but instead kicked the ball out to a wide-open Occeus who drilled a three to extend the Husky lead.
Â
Occeus not only added some offense for the Huskies but came up huge on the other end of the court with two gigantic blocks against the Terrier front court, coming out of no where to save a pair of would-be baskets in a tight game.
Â
For every basket the Huskies made, BU matched it on the other end cutting the lead to just four at 48-44 following a Havener layup with just under nine minutes to go. But the Huskies hung tough, and made their free throws down the stretch to finish with the six-point victory.
