BOSTON – Looking to hop back on the winning trail, the Northeastern women's basketball team will pull into Elon on Friday, Feb. 10, eager to knock off the first-place Phoenix as the two programs complete their regular-season series. Tipoff between NU and Elon is set for 7 p.m.
Â
ALL-TIME AGAINST ELON
Â
Northeastern and Elon had never competed against each other prior to the Phoenix's arrival in the CAA at the beginning of the 2014-15 season. Although NU is 1-4 all-time against Elon, the Huskies have split their two previous games at Alumni Gym, winning last year's road contest, 67-61, on Feb. 14, 2016. The visiting team does hold the advantage in the series, having won four of the five meetings.
Â
HUSKIES ON THE ROAD
Â
Northeastern can end a four-game stretch without a road victory on Friday night. The Huskies arrive in Elon with a 3-7 away record this season, going 2-3 during their non-conference schedule and 1-4 during their CAA slate. Two of Northeastern's three road victories have come when scoring 60 or more points, while NU has won only one road game when finishing below the 60-point threshold.
Â
PHOENIX AT HOME
Â
Elon enters Friday's game with a 7-2 cumulative home record, having won five of its last six contests at Alumni Gym. The Phoenix have typically won comfortably when playing in front of their hometown fans, achieving six double-digit victories, including four against CAA competition. Elon did suffer its lone conference loss this season on its home floor, dropping a 76-70 result against James Madison on Jan. 20.
Â
NU TO RETIRE TESHA TINSLEY'S JERSEY
Â
Northeastern will proudly retire the No. 10 jersey of Tesha Tinsley, arguably the greatest player women's basketball player to ever don the NU red-and-black, prior to the Huskies' Feb. 12 game against College of Charleston. Tinsley, who graduated from Northeastern in 2000, remains to this day the Huskies' lone 2,000-point scorer (2,187) and holds a plethora of career program records, including scoring average (19.0 points per game), field goals made (839), assists (464), steals (281), and minutes (4,168), among others. Arriving at Northeastern from Western High School in Baltimore, Tinsley was the catalyst behind the Huskies two-year turnaround of 18 victories from 1996-97 to 1998-99, helping lead NU to its first America East title (1999) and NCAA tournament appearance.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Â
Making her first start since Dec. 18, 2015,
Maureen Taggart rose to the challenge during the Huskies' Feb. 5 game against James Madison, tallying 11 points courtesy of three 3-pointers, four rebounds, and three assists. Taggart played 38 of the 40 minutes, despite Northeastern coming up short against the Dukes, 67-49, at Cabot Center.
Claudia Ortiz led NU in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 15 points and eight boards. Northeastern trailed James Madison by only one point, 19-18, at the end of the first quarter upon both teams shooting 50 percent from the floor. However, JMU completed the first half on a 19-4 scoring run to take a double-digit lead into halftime.
Â
ORTIZ ON FIRE
Â
Claudia Ortiz rides a streak of five consecutive double-digit scoring games into Friday's CAA battle between Northeastern and Elon, leading the Huskies during each outing. Since Jan. 15, Ortiz has been Northeastern's top scorer during six of the squad's seven games, averaging 17.5 points per victory. Considering CAA games only, the NU junior is averaging an even 15.0 points per game and owns the best shooting percentage on the team (44 percent) by five percent.
Â
HUSKIES EARN FANS' VOTE THREE TIMES
Â
Northeastern is a three-time winner of the CAA Top Performer of the Day fan poll on Twitter, as hosted by @CAABasketball, the official Twitter account of CAA hoops:
