CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Backed by a career-high 46 saves from sophomore
Brittany Bugalski, the Northeastern women's hockey team (19-10-3, 14-7-2 WHEA) snapped Boston College's NCAA-record, 63-game home unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win over the No. 6 Eagles on Friday at Conte Forum. Junior
Shelby Herrington and freshman
Andrea Renner scored for the Huskies, who clinched the No. 2 seed in the Hockey East Tournament later this month.
After a scoreless period and a half, Herrington broke the silence with a short-handed marker – Northeastern's NCAA-leading eighth of the season and third against the Eagles in four games. Renner put Northeastern up 2-0 early in the third, before BC chipped back with a Caitrin Lonergan power-play goal with 9:44 to play. With 1:35 left in regulation, BC pulled the goalie but was unable to tie the game as NU earned its first win over the Eagles in 17 tries.
After an impressive performance against BC in Tuesday's Beanpot final, Bugalski was at her best yet again on Friday, stopping 18 shots in the first period, nine in the second period, and 19 in the final frame as the Eagles out-shot the Huskies by a 47-32 margin.
Goal Recaps
• Northeastern marked the score sheet first with a short-handed tally from Herrington 9:42 into the second. After an offensive-zone faceoff win, senior
Paige Savage fed the puck to sophomore
Maddie Hartman who fired a shot from the right point. Herrington, just outside the crease, was able to redirect the puck to the back of the cage for her fifth goal of the season and first career shorthanded tally.
• The Huskies extended their lead to 2-0 on Renner's third of the season early in the final frame. Junior
McKenna Brand carried the puck through the neutral zone, passing to Herrington behind the BC net. Herrington tossed the puck to Renner in the crease where the rookie relentlessly pushed the puck until she was able to slide it past BC netminder Katie Burt at 3:22 of the third.
• The Eagles' power-play unit, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA, cut the deficit to one with 9:44 to go in regulation. Burt sent the puck up the ice to Caitrin Lonergan, who skated behind the NU net and threw the disc out in front, off an NU player's skate and over Bugalski's left shoulder.
