BOSTON – Seniors
Paige Savage and
Heather Mottau lit the lamp for the Northeastern women's hockey team (19-11-3, 14-8-2 WHEA) in a 7-2 loss at Boston University (16-10-6, 11-8-4 WHEA) in the Huskies' regular season finale on Friday at Walter Brown Arena.
Savage put Northeastern on the board first, before Boston University responded with five unanswered goals to surge ahead, 5-1, after two periods. Mottau put a dent in the Terriers' lead midway through the third, but BU would get the best of Northeastern with two more goals to round out the scoring.
Five different Huskies marked the score sheet Friday with junior
Denisa Krizova, senior
Hayley Scamurra and junior
Halle Silva all picking up assists in addition to the goals from Savage and Mottau.
Sophomore
Brittany Bugalski and senior captain
Sarah Foss shared time between the pipes tonight. Bugalski made nine saves through the first 26:53 before Foss stopped 17 shots over the final 32:58.
The Terriers cashed in on two of six power plays and negated all seven of Northeastern's opportunities.
Goal Recaps
• Northeastern took the lead when Savage opened scoring at 4:14 of the first period. As BU attempted to move the puck out of its zone, Silva stripped the puck from a Terrier and redirected the disc towards the slot where Savage was able to gain control and send it through Victoria Hanson's five-hole.
• The Terriers responded on the power play when Abby Cook sent a pass to Nina Rodgers at the top of the right circle for a one-timer that sailed between Bugalski's pads at 13:43 of the opening frame.
• BU took the lead just 54 seconds later with a strike from Maddie Elia. After Elia sent the puck bouncing behind the NU net, Rebecca Leslie intercepted an NU pass and quickly shifted to the front of the net. Bugalski made the initial save but Elia was able to poke in the rebound at 14:37 of the first period.
• Boston University ran away with the second period beginning with a tally from Mary Parker at 5:39 of the second stanza. Victoria Bach carried the puck up the ice and passed to Parker at the right circle for a snipe past Bugalski for a 3-1 Terriers' lead.
• Less than two minutes later, Samantha Sutherland tossed the puck to Natasza Tarnowski for a shot that bounced off Bugalski and onto the stick of Sutherland, who chipped home the rebound from a tough angle.
• The Terriers capitalized on another power play with Bach's team-leading 21st goal of the season at the 9:12 mark of the second period. Parker collected the puck behind the NU net and tossed it to Bach at the right faceoff dot. Bach then fired a shot over Foss' left shoulder to put BU up by four.
• Northeastern inched back midway through the third with a tally from Mottau. Krizova sent the puck towards the cage to Scamurra, who tried to redirect it by Hanson's glove side. Mottau caught the rebound and chipped it past Hanson at 10:41 of the final frame to make it 5-2.
• At 11:10 in the final period, Boston University regained its four-goal lead on Parker's second of the night. Bach dangled the puck past two NU defenders and Parker picked it up in the crease and tucked it in the right corner for a 6-2 Terrier lead.
• The final goal of the game came at 13:58 of the third when Sutherland carried the puck coast-to-coast before passing to Natalie Flynn, who deked past Foss to make it 7-2.
