HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior
Nick Fanneron hit his third career home run as the Northeastern baseball team took a 14-1 loss on Saturday in game two of the weekend series against Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) scored in every inning and received a standout performance from starting pitcher Kirk McCarty, who limited the Huskies (0-2) to two hits over seven scoreless innings.
Sophomore
Charlie McConnell led off the game with a single and a stolen base, but the Huskies were held without another runner in scoring position until a double by freshman
Scott Holzwasser in the top of the seventh.
After USM plated the first 11 runs of the ballgame, Fanneron put Northeastern on the board with a pinch-hit, solo blast off reliever Alex Nelms in the eighth. The home run was one of two pinch-hits for NU on the day as senior
Jimmy Hand added a single in the ninth.
Northeastern starter
Andrew Misiaszek struck out three batters over three innings, while allowing four earned runs, including a solo homer by USM catcher Bryant Bowen in the third.
While the Golden Eagles were able to churn out 16 hits (to Northeastern's five), the Huskies' pitching staff still stranded 15 USM runners on the day.
Matt Walner led the hosts with three hits and two RBI in five plate appearances, while Taylor Braley, Tracy Hadley and Hunter Slater each recorded two hits and combined for eight RBI.
The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch from Pete Taylor Park set for 2 p.m. EST. Northeastern is expected to turn to starter
Kyle Murphy for his collegiate debut Sunday as the Huskies try to salvage a win in Hattiesburg.
