JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Led by shortstop
Max Burt's five-for-eight day at the plate and a collection of strong offensive performances, the Northeastern baseball team came away with a split of Saturday's doubleheader against North Florida, defeating the Ospreys, 7-6, in extra innings during game one before experiencing a 17-6 setback during game two.
Â
Burt's bat refused to cool off during nine combined plate appearances as the junior captain collected five RBIs on five separate hits: two singles, two doubles, and a home run. The North Andover, Massachusetts, native notched both of his doubles during game one, including one that tied the game at 5-5 during the top of the eighth after Northeastern had fallen behind North Florida during the previous inning.
Â
Mason Koppens recorded a pair of multi-hit games on Saturday, improving his streak of consecutive multi-hit contests to four in a row. Upon going four-for-nine during the twin billing, the NU outfielder solidified his presence as the Huskies' six-game leader in hits (11) and batting average (.458).
Â
Â
GAME ONE: Northeastern 7, North Florida 6 (10 innings)
Â
Koppens was involved in the scoring of each of Northeastern's first two runs of the opening game. The five-foot-10 speedster struck a leadoff double through the right-center gap during the very first at-bat of the day, scoring two batters later on
Charlie McConnell's RBI groundout to second. During the following inning, Koppens came through again in a big way, shooting a two-out, RBI single up the middle to score
Jimmy Hand from second.
Â
Although North Florida's Joe Boyle would halve Northeastern's lead to 2-1 courtesy of a second-inning homer, NU managed to bring home a run during the third consecutive frame, allowing the Huskies to regain a two-run edge at 3-1.
Cam Hanley wisely took second base upon McConnell being caught in a rundown between second and third, leaving the door open for Burt to knock a two-out RBI single up the middle.
Â
Surrendering another run back to the Ospreys during the bottom of the fourth, Northeastern again jumped back in front by two runs during the fifth. With runners on the corners, Burt elevated a double to center field, scoring McConnell easily to put the Huskies ahead, 4-2.
Â
Retiring the first two batters of the seventh inning, NU starter
Andrew Misiaszek had the winning decision in sight before North Florida's Chris Berry completed a two-out rally with a three-run home run that gave the Ospreys their first lead at 5-4. Although Misiaszek would exit the game having thrown five strikeouts during six and two-thirds innings, Burt came to the rescue during the Huskies' second at-bat of the eighth, rocketing an RBI double that scored the tying run (Hanley) from first base.
Â
With
David Stiehl's relief outing assuring the Huskies extra innings, Northeastern proceeded to score twice during the top of the 10th inning on RBI singles by
Nick Fanneron and
David Hopkins.
Tyler Robinson relieved Stiehl between innings and despite allowing two runners to reach scoring position, secured his first save of the 2017 season.
Â
Â
GAME TWO: North Florida 17, Northeastern 6
Â
North Florida took control of game two right from the start, following a three-run first inning with a five-run second to stake an 8-1 lead. The Ospreys did NU rookie
Tom Githens in for four hits apiece during each of the first two frames, while two defensive errors by the Huskies also prolonged North Florida's time at the plate.
Michael Geaslen accounted for Northeastern's second-inning run, lacing a two-out single that scored
Zach Perry from second base.
Â
Burt's fourth-inning, solo homer shaved a run off the Ospreys' lead and whittled the Huskies' deficit to 9-2, while Geaslen's fifth-inning, leadoff double initiated a two-run frame for Northeastern that narrowed the game to 9-4.
Â
NU went quiet during the sixth and seventh innings, while North Florida tacked on three insurance runs during the bottom of the seventh. Burt and Madigan drove in the Huskies' two eighth-inning runs to bring the score to 12-6, before the Ospreys rallied for five more runs off Northeastern's
Teddy Beaudet and
Will Jahn.
