JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Pat Madigan's fifth-inning RBI double stood as the only scoring play for the Northeastern baseball team on Sunday afternoon against North Florida as the Huskies concluded their weekend series against the Ospreys with an 11-1 setback at Harmon Stadium.
Â
Despite the result, Northeastern (2-5) came away with a split of the four-game set against North Florida (4-4), having won Friday's series opener, 9-1, as well as game one of Saturday's doubleheader, 7-6, in 10 innings.
Â
NU catcher
Michael Geaslen went two-for-three to lead the Huskies at the plate on Sunday, improving his hit streak to three straight games. Defensively, the redshirt-sophomore helped his pitcher,
Kyle Murphy, out of a third-inning jam, throwing out the Ospreys' leadoff man, Yahir Gurrola, at second base to end the frame. Murphy lasted four and one-third innings for Northeastern, striking out two while allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits.
Â
The Huskies had difficulty charting runs against North Florida's Frank German, who went seven innings, surrendering only one run on six hits while also striking out six. Madigan's RBI double was the only extra-base hit Northeastern could muster for eight innings, until
Ryan Solomon delivered a one-out double during the top of the ninth.
Â
North Florida posted a trio of three-run frames during the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, in addition to tacking on single runs during the second and eighth innings. The Ospreys gained six of their runs from three separate home runs, including a fourth-inning, three-run jack by left fielder Tanner Murphy that gave North Florida a 4-0 lead. Murphy also hit two doubles and finished the day with four RBIs.
Â
Brian Christian and
Brian Rodriguez each picked up relief outings for the Huskies on Sunday. Christian allowed four hits during two and two-thirds innings, while Rodriguez struck out two North Florida batters during the bottom of the eighth.
