BOSTON – The Northeastern women's hockey team (18-9-3) will be looking for a record 17th Beanpot title on Tuesday night when it hosts No. 6 Boston College (20-3-5) in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The Huskies and Eagles are meeting for the Beanpot championship for the fourth time in the last five seasons; Northeastern claimed the title at home in 2013, before Boston College posted wins in the 2014 and 2016 finals.
BEANPOT FINAL: QUICK HITS
• Northeastern will be looking for a record 17th Beanpot title on Tuesday against Boston College. The Huskies last hoisted the Beanpot in 2013 with a 4-3 victory over Boston College at Matthews Arena.
• One member of Northeastern's 2013 Beanpot title team remains on today's roster:
Paige Savage. Savage had a goal and an assist in the 2013 championship, and tallied two goals in the 2017 opening round vs. Harvard. Savage has six points (3-3-6) in seven career Beanpot games.
• Northeastern and Boston College will be meeting in the Beanpot final for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The Huskies beat the Eagles, 4-3, in the 2013 edition at Matthews Arena, before BC posted wins over Northeastern in the 2014 and 2016 finals.
• Northeastern is 8-0 all-time in Beanpot final games played on home ice, including three wins over Boston College (1979, 1996, 2013). The Huskies are 4-2 against the Eagles in the Beanpot final overall.
• Tuesday's Beanpot final will feature two of the country's longest unbeaten streaks as Boston College enters on a 16-game unbeaten run (13-0-3), while Northeastern comes in riding a five-game winning streak.
• Northeastern beat Harvard, 4-1, last Tuesday to advance to its fifth Beanpot championship game in the last six years. Senior
Paige Savage scored two goals and sophomore
Brittany Bugalski turned aside 28 of 29 shots.
• Junior
Denisa Krizova was named the Warrior Player of the Month in Hockey East on Friday after leading the league with 15 points in nine January games. Krizova ended the month with five straight multi-point performances, including a two-assist effort against Harvard in last week's Beanpot semifinal.
• Krizova is currently on international duty with the Czech Republic National Team as it attempts to qualify for the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Krizova and the Czechs will face host Switzerland, Denmark and Norway in a round robin format on Feb. 9-12, with the winner qualifying directly for next year's Olympics.
• Junior forward
McKenna Brand added to her NCAA-leading goal total with her 22nd and 23rd goals of the season last week. Brand tallied a power-play goal on Tuesday against Harvard, before adding a goal and an assist in a 4-3 win over Providence on senior day Friday. With 23 goals on the year, Brand has scored five more goals than any other Hockey East player, and three more goals than any other player in the nation. Brand is tied for second in the NCAA with three shorthanded goals, and is tied for sixth nationally with five game-winning goals.
SEASON SERIES VS. BOSTON COLLEGE
Northeastern will be facing Boston College at Matthews Arena for the third time this season when the puck drops Tuesday night. The teams skated to a 2-2 tie on Nov. 20 as junior
McKenna Brand scored two goals and sophomore
Brittany Bugalski made a season-high 36 saves. Boston College claimed a 4-2 victory on Nov. 26 as the Eagles scored the final three goals to overturn a 2-1 third-period deficit. Northeastern entered the final frame trailing 1-0, before goals by Brand and
Paige Savage put the Huskies in front. The lead lasted only 24 seconds, however, as the Eagles roared back with two goals in a span of 2:21 to re-take the lead for good.
HUSKIES TOP PROVIDENCE IN OT
Junior
Lauren Kelly netted the overtime game-winner as Northeastern picked up its fifth straight victory with a 4-3 triumph over Providence on Friday at Matthews Arena. The teams alternated goals through the first 60 minutes, before a Providence penalty late in the third period gave Northeastern an opportunity to seize the game in the extra session. The Huskies wasted little time netting the decisive tally as Kelly's point shot found the back of the cage just 1:07 into overtime to give NU its first OT win of the season.
SAVAGE BREAKS PROGRAM RECORD
Senior
Paige Savage made her 142nd appearance for Northeastern on Friday against Providence, which set a new program record for the most games played in a Huskies' uniform. The previous record was held by Jaime Totten, who appeared in 141 games between 1995-99. Savage has piled up 103 points on 36 goals and 67 assists in her illustrious Northeastern career.
SURGING SCAMURRA
Senior
Hayley Scamurra enters Tuesday's Beanpot final riding a five-game point streak. Over that span, Scamurra has compiled two goals and six assists, including an assist in the Beanpot semifinals vs. Harvard and a goal on senior day Friday against Providence. Scamurra ranks second on the team with 21 assists in 30 games this season.
HUSKIES TOP THE SCORING CHARTS
Junior forward
McKenna Brand enters the week as the leading goal scorer in the nation with 23 goals in 30 games. Brand's linemate,
Denisa Krizova, has also been an offensive sparkplug as she leads Hockey East in points with 39 in 29 games. Krizova has assisted on 12 of Brand's 23 goals overall.
SHORTHANDED SUCCESS
Northeastern is tied for the national lead with seven shorthanded goals this season, including three by junior
McKenna Brand. Only Cornell's Kristin O'Neill has scored more shorthanded goals (4) than Brand. The Huskies have potted at least seven shorthanded goals in four of the last six seasons overall.
JESSICA WAGNER GETS BEANPOT HOF CALL
Alumna Jessica Wagner '98 will be inducted into the Women's Beanpot Hall of Fame on Feb. 7 at Matthews Arena. Wagner was a member of three Beanpot championship teams (1994, 1996, 1997) during her four-year career on Huntington Avenue. The Anoka, Minnesota, native was honored as the 1996 tournament MVP after scoring both the game-tying goal and the overtime game-winning goal in a 4-3 win over Boston College in the championship game. Wagner then co-captained NU to both the 1997 Beanpot title, as well as the 1997 ECAC crown – the equivalent of the national championship at the time. In nine career Beanpot games, Wagner amassed seven goals and six assists, while helping NU to an 8-1-0 record in the tournament.
HUSKIES DOWN HARVARD IN BEANPOT SEMIS
Paige Savage scored two goals and junior
Halle Silva added a goal and an assist as the Huskies advanced to the Beanpot championship game for the fifth time in the last six seasons with a 4-1 victory over Harvard on Jan. 31 at Matthews Arena. Savage and Silva were joined on the scoresheet by junior
McKenna Brand, who netted her NCAA-leading 22nd goal of the season with a power-play strike late in the third period. Junior
Denisa Krizova added two assists, while sophomore
Brittany Bugalski was excellent in goal with 28 saves on 29 shots, including 13 stops in the third period. The Huskies will face Boston College in the Beanpot final on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. after the Eagles defeated Boston University, 3-2, in the first semifinal.
