BOSTON – Despite a 22-save performance from Bertagna Award winner
Brittany Bugalski, the Northeastern women's hockey team (18-10-3) fell just short in its bid for a 17th Beanpot title in a 2-1 loss to No. 6 Boston College (21-3-5) on Tuesday at Matthews Arena.
After two scoreless periods, sophomore
Kasidy Anderson gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead 1:07 into the final frame with a snipe on a breakaway following a great outlet pass from freshman
Andrea Renner.Â
The lead stood for just over seven minutes until Boston College pulled even on a goal by Kristyn Capizzano at the 8:37 mark. The Eagles then took the lead for good just over four minutes later when Erin Connolly, the 2017 Beanpot MVP, poked home a power-play goal to make it 2-1 for the visitors.
Bugalski was spectacular from start to finish and became the fourth Northeastern goaltender to claim the Bertagna Award (Beanpot's top goaltender) in program history, joining Erika Silva (2000 and 2001), Florence Schelling (2012) and Chloe Desjardins (2013).
Goal Recaps
• Northeastern struck first just over a minute into the third period when sophomore
Maddie Hartman broke up a BC attack in the NU zone, allowing the puck to squirt free for Renner in the neutral zone. The freshman alertly spotted Anderson streaking ahead of the play and hit the sophomore with a tape-to-tape pass to create a one-on-one with BC netminder Katie Burt. Anderson skated in and made no mistake, firing a bullet into the top left corner of the net to put the Huskies ahead 1:07 into the third period.
• Boston College evened the score at 8:37 when Capizzano took a feed from Delaney Belinskas on the left wing, and fired a shot off the stick of an NU defenseman and over the blocker of Bugalski to make it 1-1.
• The Eagles struck again for the game-winning goal on the power play at 12:56 of the third. From the right point, Kenzie Kent sent a pass to the side of the net for Andie Anastos, who quickly shifted the puck into the slot for Connolly to fire home with a one-timer from point-blank range.
