ELON, N.C. – Despite being graced with a 6-4 lead courtesy of
Pat Madigan's solo homer, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to hold onto its sixth-inning lead on Saturday afternoon as the Phoenix scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Huskies, 11-6, leveling the two teams' CAA-opening series at one game apiece.
At the time, Madigan's blast had put Northeastern (8-12, 1-1 CAA) on the scoreboard for the third consecutive inning after the Huskies had manufactured three runs during the top of the fourth and tacked on another run during the fifth. Elon (10-13, 1-1 CAA) responded immediately to Madigan's homer, lowering Northeastern's lead to 6-5 during the bottom of the sixth before rallying for six runs during the bottom of the seventh.
Entertaining a pair of multi-hit games,
Max Burt and
Cam Hanley successfully extended their hitting streaks to 13 and eight games, respectively. Burt began his day at the plate by punching a double down the left-field line during the top of the second inning, later knocking an RBI single during the fifth inning to give NU a 5-2 advantage. Hanley reached safely during three of his five plate appearances, providing the RBI double that tied the game at 2-2 during the top of the fourth inning, walking during the fifth, and singling during the ninth.
Coincidentally, Burt's 13-game hitting streak now stands as the longest an NU player has attained since Hanley's 13-game streak from 2015.
Northeastern received all but two hits and two runs from the second through fifth spots of its batting order.
Mason Koppens, the Huskies' two-hitter, reached base two times and scored on both occasions, while
Ryan Solomon batted clean-up, belting a seventh-inning single.
Scott Holzwasser helped Northeastern break a 2-2 tie during the top of the fourth inning, collecting two RBIs on a bases-loaded single that floated over the Phoenix's second baseman.
Elon enjoyed one of its better offensive days this year, scoring a season high, 11 runs, on Saturday while charting 13 hits. Ryne Ogren and Kyle Jackson both doubled and produced three hits apiece for the Phoenix, while Shawn Blake homered for the second straight game, tightening the game at 5-4 during the bottom of the fifth. Zach Evers and Kory Shumate also logged multiple hits for the home team.
