ELON, N.C. – Locked in a stalemate with Elon through six and a half innings on Sunday, the Northeastern baseball team ultimately succumbed to a pair of late home runs by the Phoenix, including an eighth-inning grand slam, as the Huskies were handed a 6-0 setback during the two teams' series finale at Latham Park.
Â
NU hurlers
Brian Christian and
Brian Rodriguez had combined to limit the home team to just two hits across six shutout innings before Elon leadoff batter Joe Satterfield broke the scoreless tie with a first-pitch homer to right field. Satterfield's solo shot produced the first earned run of Rodriguez's career, snapping the freshman's streak of nine straight relief appearances with a flawless ERA.
Â
Eighth-inning doubles by Will Nance and Cam Devanney laid the foundation for the Phoenix's five-run frame that culminated with Hayden Platt's grand slam.
Â
Northeastern (8-13, 1-2 CAA) experienced one of its quieter days at the plate this season, swinging a season low, four hits (all singles), while being held scoreless for the first time during the 2017 campaign. Despite the lull in offensive production, the Huskies still had their chances, stranding the bases loaded during the top of the third while leaving runners at first and second during the seventh and eighth innings.
Â
Cam Hanley saved his hitting streak during his fourth and final plate appearance of the afternoon, raising it to nine games on an eighth-inning single to left center. On the downside,
Max Burt's 13-game hitting streak came to an end upon the NU shortstop going hitless during four at-bats.
Â
Scott Holzwasser notched the first hit of the day for either team during the top of the third, advancing as far as third base with
Charlie McConnell and
Mason Koppens walking behind him. Northeastern's infield held the answer to Satterfield's leadoff single during the bottom of the inning, turning the first of two double plays on the afternoon.
Â
Christian survived a bases-loaded jam unscathed during the bottom of the fifth, having walked three Elon batters before collecting the final out via his fourth strikeout. Rodriguez also worked around two base runners during the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Kyle Brnovich threw six and two-thirds scoreless innings for Elon (11-13, 2-1 CAA), striking out six while walking four and allowing three hits. Derek Pike received the winning decision while Danny Crowe earned his third save of the year.
Â
With Sunday's result, the Phoenix won their third straight regular-season series against the Huskies and improved to 4-2 all-time against NU at Latham Park.
