TOWSON, Md. – Nick Fanneron's grand slam during game one and three homers by Pat Madigan (two) and Max Burt during game two were among the key offensive plays that led the Northeastern baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Towson, 5-2 and 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.

With the victories, Northeastern (10-14, 3-2 CAA) guaranteed its first multi-game series victory of the 2017 season, as well as its first at Towson (9-13, 0-2 CAA) in four tries since 2009.

Mike Fitzgerald and David Stiehl, the Huskies' respective starters during games one and two, combined to trail for only five outs of their combined 13 innings on the mound. Both NU pitchers received winning decisions, with Stiehl's equating to his first-ever as a starting pitcher (eighth appearance).

Offensively, Northeastern held a 20-10 advantage in hits on Saturday, including a 6-3 edge in extra-base hits.

GAME ONE: Northeastern 5, Towson 2

Unable to spark a second-inning rally off Pat Madigan's two-out double, Northeastern decided to go to work against Towson starter Dean Stramara during the top of the third inning, beginning with Scott Holzwasser's first-pitch, leadoff single.

With Charlie McConnell aboard two batters later courtesy of a four-pitch walk, Mason Koppens sent a single into right field, but the Tigers' defense managed to tag Holzwasser out between third and home. A second four-pitch walk issued by Stramara to Cam Hanley allowed NU to load the bases for Nick Fanneron, who proceeded to crush his first career grand slam down the right field line.

Out to a 4-0 lead, the Huskies tacked on another insurance run during the top of the fifth. Similar to the third inning, Northeastern loaded the bases on just one hit (Koppens' leadoff single), setting the stage for Madigan to deliver an RBI single through the left side.

Mike Fitzgerald earned 14 outs from the first 15 batters he faced and carried a two-hit shutout into the bottom of the seventh inning, where the Tigers' Colin Gimblet belted a two-run homer. The NU right-hander closed out his line having allowed two runs on four hits across seven innings, striking out eight Towson batters to tie his career high.

Brian Rodriguez threw two hitless frames en route to collecting his first career save. The freshman reliever benefitted during the bottom of the eighth from Burt's diving play at shortstop that sparked an inning-ending, 6-4-3 double play.

Koppens, Madigan, and Holzwasser combined to hammer six of the Huskies' eight hits. Holzwasser also doubled between the Huskies' two scoring innings, knocking one down the left field line during the top of the fourth.

With the win, Northeastern won its fourth straight series opener, all of which have started with Fitzgerald on the mound. NU also improved to 4-0 this season during the first game of a doubleheader.

GAME TWO: Northeastern 7, Towson 5

After cranking out eight hits during game one, eight different players combined to chart 12 hits for the Huskies during game two, providing the backbone and run support to David Stiehl's first collegiate start.

Trailing Towson, 1-0, during the top of the fourth inning, Pat Madigan leveled the game by unleashing a solo shot to left field. The very next inning, the NU outfielder came through again with a solo homer, this time powering the second of back-to-back jacks by he and teammate Max Burt to cushion Northeastern's lead at 5-1.

Madigan's multi-homer game is the first by an NU player since Keith Kelly hit two homers against James Madison on March 26, 2016.

Bo Plagge helped gift the Huskies their sixth run of the game during the top of the sixth inning. After Charlie McConnell had reached on a one-out single, the third baseman managed to go from first to home on two wild pitches sandwiched around a balk, all taking place before Mason Koppens had completed the ensuing at-bat.

Stiehl entered the bottom of the sixth having allowed only one run on three hits, but would run into trouble with the heart of the Tigers' order. Logan Burke and Richard Miller led off the inning with consecutive singles, two batters before Colin Gimblet drew a one-out walk to load the bases.

During the next at-bat, Cuinn Mullins took the first pitch he received from Stiehl into center field for a bases-clearing double, trimming Northeastern's lead to 6-4. However, the NU relay team of Koppens, Burt, and McConnell successfully nabbed Mullins on his way to third base, relieving the pressure on Stiehl and assuring the tying run would not come to the plate on his watch.

NU loaded the bases during the top of the seventh inning, where the Huskies would increase their lead on a wild pitch that headed towards the backstop. Towson would go on to return the run during the bottom of the eighth inning, capitalizing on two wild pitches by Andrew Misiaszek that made it a two-run ballgame.

The Tigers would ultimately bring the tying run to the plate twice during the final two innings, but the Huskies would deny them on both occasions. Misiaszek struck out Colin Dyer to end the eighth inning and Tyler Robinson created the ground ball that triggered Northeastern's game-ending, 3-6-3 double play.
