BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Max Burt's two-RBI double and
Scott Holzwasser's two-run homer helped put starting pitcher
Mike Fitzgerald in a position to collect his fourth victory of the season as the Northeastern baseball team ran past College of Charleston, 6-3, on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies' victory coupled with Elon's 11-10 defeat against Towson moved Northeastern (14-16, 7-3 CAA) into a tie atop the CAA standings with College of Charleston (17-17, 7-3 CAA). Both sides will continue their battle for first place on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. (previously 1 p.m.).
NU found a way to escape the Cougars' six-foot-nine starting pitcher, Bailey Ober, during the bottom of the first inning. After Ober had thrown eight successive strikes to begin the game,
Cam Hanley fouled off two pitches before taking one to the arm, providing the Huskies with a two-out base runner.
Nick Fanneron proceeded to fight off another two-strike count for a single, the at-bat before Burt knocked a two-RBI double off the left field wall to put the home team in front.
Despite Charleston drawing even at 2-2 during the top of the third, Northeastern regained the lead during the bottom of the inning.
Charlie McConnell led off the frame with a first-pitch double down the right field line, moving up 90 feet on Koppens' sacrifice bunt towards the left of the pitcher's mound. Receiving the green light on a 1-1 count, Hanley lifted an RBI single into right field, scoring McConnell easily to give the Huskies a 3-2 edge.
Pat Madigan flared a liner around the Cougars' shortstop to lead off the fourth inning, but remained at first base as Ober forced
Jake Farrell to foul out along the third base line and delivered his sixth and final strikeout to
John Mazza. Electing to relieve Ober after three and two-thirds innings, Charleston brought on right-hander Tucker White to face the right-hand batter
Scott Holzwasser, who blasted a two-run homer over the Freidman Diamond bullpens in left field.
Fitzgerald struck out four batters across six innings of work, departing at the start of the seventh inning with the Huskies leading, 6-2. The redshirt-senior surrendered only two earned runs on four hits, raising his streak to five straight appearances having allowed five or fewer hits and two or fewer earned runs.
Northeastern's defense helped
Andrew Misiaszek out of a seventh-inning jam, turning a timely 6-4-3, inning-ending double play to keep the Huskies' 6-2 lead in tact.
Tyler Robinson struck out the side during the top of the ninth, earning his CAA-leading, sixth save of the season.
Charleston's cleanup hitter, Logan McRae, drove in all three of the Cougars' runs. With two runners in scoring position during the top of the third, McRae brought them both home on a two-RBI single to center. He later belted a solo homer off Misiaszek with two outs during the eighth inning.
Northeastern's 11 hits on Friday mark the ninth time during the Huskies' 10 CAA games during which NU has eclipsed the eight-hit threshold. The Huskies' four extra-base hits are also the most the squad has amassed during conference play.
