BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Mason Koppens' ninth-inning RBI single to left center field capped off a string of four unanswered runs that brought the Northeastern baseball team its second walk-off victory of the year as the Huskies came from 3-0 down to defeat College of Charleston, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Koppens' game-winning hit not only provided Northeastern (15-16, 8-3 CAA) with its fourth straight victory, but also moved the Huskies into sole possession of first place in the CAA standings, one game ahead of second-place College of Charleston (17-18, 7-4 CAA). The two teams will wrap up their three-game battle for first place on Sunday at 12 p.m. (previously 1 p.m.).
Â
Held scoreless for seven innings by the Cougars' Evan Sisk, Northeastern was finally able to dig into the six-foot-two lefty during the bottom of the eighth. On Sisk's third and fifth pitches of the inning,
Charlie McConnell and Koppens pulled solo home runs to right and left field, respectively, reducing Charleston's 3-0 lead to 3-2 with six outs left to be claimed.
Â
Two batters later,
Ryan Solomon officially ended Sisk's day at seven and one-third innings, doubling off the wall in right center for his second hit of the game. Representing the tying run, Solomon was only able to make it to third base under Charleston reliever Nathan Ocker's watch before the two teams moved into the ninth inning.
Â
Taking the mound in a one-run game, the Huskies'
Brian Rodriguez appeared to surrender an all-important insurance run to the Cougars as Ari Sechopoulos knocked a leadoff triple to left center. However, Rodriguez proceeded to deal straight heat, striking out each of the top three hitters in Charleston's lineup to preserve the game's 3-2 margin.
Â
Cam Walsh opened the bottom of the ninth inning for Northeastern by pummeling a double to center field, taking third base during the next at-bat on
Nick Fanneron's pinch-hit single up the middle. With runners on the corners,
Zach Perry recorded a pinch-hit sacrifice fly that allowed Walsh to score the tying run, while also moving
Nolan Lang, who had pinch-run for Fanneron, into scoring position.
Â
Although McConnell would be retired on strikes for the second out, Koppens carried a 2-2 pitch into left center, bringing Lang around from second base to score the winning run.
Â
Nate Borges relieved starting pitcher
David Stiehl in the fourth inning and pitched four and one-third innings of scoreless baseball, striking out five Charleston batters.
Tyler Brown aided Borges out of the eighth inning, collecting two outs from the two batters he faced.
Â
Eight different offensive players combined to produce Northeastern's 12 hits on Saturday.
Â
Luke Manzo went two-for-three out of the leadoff spot for Charleston, scoring on Tommy Richter's third-inning RBI single and bringing a run home on his fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Richter and Sechopoulos also finished with multiple hits for the Cougars.
