BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Scott Holzwasser's inside-the-park home run during the bottom of the eighth inning was the 12th of what amounted to be 13 hits on Sunday afternoon for the Northeastern baseball team as the Huskies completed their three-game sweep of College of Charleston with a 6-3 victory at Friedman Diamond.
Â
With one out in the eighth and
Cam Walsh at second base, Holzwasser crushed a 1-1 pitch from Carter Love off the wall in left center, catching a fortunate break when his ball deflected away from the two charging outfielders. Being waved home just before the relay throw had been cut off, the NU rookie from Sudbury, Massachusetts, rounded third and completed his four-base hit in style, diving around the Cougars' catcher while swiping home plate with his left hand.
Â
Sunday's victory brought Northeastern (16-16, 9-3 CAA) its fifth straight win, all coming at home and against CAA competition. The first-place Huskies maintained their one-game lead against second-place Elon (8-4), while recording their first-ever sweep against College of Charleston (17-19, 7-5 CAA) in four tries.
Â
Charlie McConnell and
Mason Koppens, who had hit back-to-back home runs during the eighth inning of Saturday's game, came through again in a big way for the Huskies on Sunday. The duo combined to swing five hits with McConnell going two-for-five out of the leadoff spot and Koppens going three-for-five directly behind him. Koppens also remained perfect during his two stolen base attempts.
Â
Brian Christian delivered a solid, seven-inning performance for Northeastern, rightfully earning his fifth winning decision of the season (5-0). Despite falling behind, 2-0, three batters into the game on Erven Roper's sixth jack of the season, the junior right-hander recovered to allow just one hit during his next six innings on the hill.
Â
Christian received assistance from a fourth-inning, 3-6 double play turned by
Cam Hanley and
Max Burt, and later struck out the side during the top of the sixth, finishing with six strikeouts on the afternoon. He carried a 4-2 lead with him into the eighth inning having only thrown 84 pitches, but surrendered a leadoff homer to the final batter he faced, Riley Knudsen.
Â
Kyle Murphy relieved Christian and preserved the Huskies' 4-3 lead, working around a hit batsman during the eighth inning that introduced the tying run.
Tyler Robinson walked the first two batters of the ninth inning before
Andrew Misiaszek came on to pick up his second save of the year. All three NU relievers combined to gather the final six outs without relinquishing a hit.
Â
Singles by Holzwasser and Koppens during the bottom of the third inning, followed by Koppens' first stolen base of the day, put Northeastern in position to chip away at the Cougars' 2-0 lead. Sure enough,
Cam Hanley plated one run on an RBI groundout to the right side, the at-bat before
Nick Fanneron slugged an RBI double to right center, evening the game at two runs apiece.
Â
Wise base running by Holzwasser during the fourth inning helped NU gain a 3-2 advantage. Stealing second base with two outs, the NU second baseman came home on McConnell's RBI single to right field, sending the Huskies in front for the first time.
Â
Burt opened the bottom of the sixth inning with his team-leading, 13th double of the season and completed the final two legs of his journey around the bases on
Pat Madigan's RBI single, the ninth and final hit allowed by Charleston starting pitcher, Jakob Frishmuth.
