BOSTON – Out to a 3-0 lead during Wednesday's Beanpot consolation game at Fenway Park, the Northeastern baseball team ultimately succumbed to a six-run, fourth-inning rally by Massachusetts as the Huskies lost the seven-inning battle for third-place, 6-5.
Â
Cam Hanley reached base safely during each of his three plate appearances, driving in the first two runs of the game for Northeastern (16-17), who saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. The NU senior went to work during the very first inning, singling
Charlie McConnell home from third base after the Huskies' leadoff man had tripled to straightaway center on the very first pitch of the ballgame. Two innings later, Hanley followed
Mason Koppens' double with an RBI single off the Green Monster, despite being thrown out at second base while trying to leg out a double.
Â
On the theme of Northeastern captains hitting balls off the famed Fenway wall,
Max Burt and
Pat Madigan knocked back-to-back doubles off the Monster during the top of the fourth inning. Burt's two-bagger was the junior shortstop's team-leading, 14th double of the season, while Madigan's equated to the senior's sixth double and 11th extra-base hit of the year.
Â
Northeastern pitchers
Tyler Brown,
Will Jahn, and
Tom Githens accounted for each of the Huskies' scoreless first, second, and third innings, respectively. Massachusetts (9-21) managed to plate its first run off
Mike Driscoll during the bottom of the fourth inning, doing so on a sacrifice fly by Matt Bare. Although Driscoll would go on to strikeout Eddy Hart for the second out, he and fellow NU arm
Brian Rodriguez shared in three consecutive walks, allowing UMass to pull within a run at 3-2.
Â
The Minutemen took over the lead for the first time on Mike Geannelis' bases-clearing double down the left field line, the at-bat before Geannelis upped UMass' lead to 6-3 on an RBI single by Cooper Mrowka.
Â
Northeastern closed the door back to a run during the top of the fifth inning as
Zach Perry belted a pinch-hit, two-RBI double off the Monster, scoring Hanley and McConnell. Perry was the last batter to face Casey Aubin, who went four and two-thirds innings, striking out three against eight hits and two walks.
