Huskies come from behind to sweep Towson

Box Score | Season Statistics | Infographic

TOWSON, Md. – Heading into the sixth inning of Sunday's game against Towson on the wrong side of a three-run, one-hit shutout, the Northeastern baseball team rallied for five unanswered runs down the stretch to steal the series finale, 5-3, and complete the weekend sweep of the Tigers at Schuerholz Park.

Charlie McConnell was involved on each of the Huskies' first two scoring plays that aided in Northeastern (11-14, 4-2 CAA) whittling down its 3-0 deficit to 3-2. After reaching on an error to lead off the sixth inning, the sophomore proceeded to steal second base and move up another 90 feet on a wild pitch, allowing him to dart home on Mason Koppens' RBI infield single. During the next inning, McConnell provided more help from the batter's box, pummeling an RBI double to left center that brought John Mazza in from first base and left the Huskies within a run of Towson (9-14, 0-3 CAA).

After Northeastern had loaded the bases during the top of the eighth inning, Pat Madigan delivered a two-RBI knock through the left side, awarding the Huskies their first lead of the afternoon. Cam Hanley later capped off a string of four straight scoring innings for NU during the top of the ninth, singling Koppens home from second base to generate the 5-3 score line.

Despite Towson plating three runs during the opening three innings, Brian Christian never lost his command, striking out a career best, 11 batters, during his seven-inning, 106-pitch start. The junior right-hander settled in during the game's middle innings, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard during his final four innings of work. Christian exited the game after Northeastern had taken its first lead at 4-3, allowing him to claim his third winning decision of the year (3-0).

Kyle Murphy relieved Christian at the start of the eighth inning and retired each of the first five Towson batters he faced. With the potential tying run at first base during the bottom of the ninth, Murphy struck out Logan Burke to end the game, collecting his first career save.

Towson's Michael Adams matched Christian's seven innings, scattering five hits and allowing three runs, two earned, in addition to striking out five. Although Adams surrendered a single to McConnell during the very first at-bat of the game, the right-hander did not allow another NU hit until Koppens' sixth-inning single that put the Huskies on the board for the first time.

The top three spots in the Huskies' batting order (McConnell, Koppens, and Hanley) combined to produce six of Northeastern's nine hits, five of which came during the final four innings.

With the victory, NU achieved its second regular-season sweep of Towson as a CAA member, having defeated the Tigers three straight times at Friedman Diamond during the 2012 campaign. Northeastern also recorded its first-ever, three-game road sweep of the Tigers.
