BROOKLINE, Mass. – Pairing 23 runs and 19 hits of offense with 14 out of a possible 16 scoreless innings on defense, the Northeastern baseball team cruised to two victories during Saturday's doubleheader against NYIT at Friedman Diamond, winning its ninth and 10th games during the month of April by respective scores of 12-3 and 11-0.

Northeastern (18-17) received balanced contribution from both sides of the diamond, combining to hit .297 during the two games while the Huskies' arms struck out 20 batters, walked only four, and limited NYIT (3-28-1) to three total runs on nine hits.

GAME ONE: Northeastern 12, NYIT 3 (seven innings)

Frank Sanacore's leadoff double to open the morning may have provided some early trouble for NU starting pitcher Nate Borges, who despite falling behind, 1-0, during the first inning, bounced back to strike out a career high, 10 batters, en route to picking up his first winning decision of the 2017 season.

Mason Koppens came to Borges' calling during the bottom of the first, shooting the first of his two triples during the game through the gap in right center field. Koppens proceeded to level up the score at one run apiece during the next at-bat, charging home on Cam Hanley's RBI groundout to the right side.

Patience paid off for the Huskies during the bottom of the second inning as Pat Madigan and John Mazza followed Max Burt's leadoff single with a pair of walks, loading the bases for nine-hole hitter, David Hopkins. NU caught a fortunate break when Hopkins' ground ball rolled through Mele at third base, allowing Burt to score the first of four unearned runs for the Huskies during the frame. After Mazza had scored on a wild pitch to put Northeastern in front, 3-1, Koppens doubled the Huskies' lead with his second triple during as many at-bats, earning two RBIs in the process.

Ryan Solomon upped Northeastern's lead to 6-1 with a solo homer to begin the bottom of the third inning, but the Huskies were eager to play for more. Burt proceeded to draw a four-pitch walk off NYIT starting pitcher Ben Wright and later stole second base, placing himself in position to score on Madigan's RBI single to right field.

With Borges limiting the Bears to three hits across his six-inning outing, Northeastern continued to tee off during the bottom of the fourth inning. In the wake of Hanley's leadoff walk, Burt reached base for his third consecutive plate appearance, doubling down the left field line to move his teammate into scoring position. Upon Madigan being pelted with a 2-1 pitch, the stage was set for defending CAA Rookie of the Week, Scott Holzwasser, who shuttled his first career grand slam to left field, putting the Huskies in front by double digits, 11-1.

Sean Mellen relieved Borges during the top of the seventh and struck out three batters, despite surrendering a two-RBI triple to Benjamin McNeill.

GAME TWO: Northeastern 11, NYIT 0

Having tallied five extra-base hits during game one, Northeastern kept its hit parade in full throttle during game two, beginning immediately with Charlie McConnell's leadoff tripe to right field. Electing to take off on Koppens' infield grounder during the next at-bat, McConnell appeared to be late arriving at home plate, but a dropped ball by the Bears' catcher allowed the Huskies to plate the game's first run.

Later in the inning, Max Burt and Mason Koppens successfully executed a double steal, allowing Northeastern to gain an early, 2-0 edge.

David Stiehl motored through the NYIT lineup to begin his fourth start of the season, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced. The NU rookie right-hander lasted a career long, seven innings, on the mound, allowing no runs on three hits while also walking none.

Zach Perry cashed in on his first of two RBI doubles during the bottom of the third inning, later kicking off the Huskies' five-run rally during the bottom of the sixth inning that witnessed six NU batters come to the plate with two outs. Cam Walsh unleashed one of his two doubles to give Northeastern an 8-0 edge, while Jimmy Hand provided the two-RBI triple down the right field line that lifted NU to its second double-digit lead of the day.

Northeastern added a run during the bottom of the seventh inning to take an 11-0 lead, before Will Jahn and Rick Burroni completed the Huskeis' first shutout of the 2017 season.

SCHEDULE NOTE

Friday's postponed game has been rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader between Northeastern and NYIT at Friedman Diamond, beginning at 11 a.m. Both games will be seven innings in length, with game two following 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
