BROOKLINE, Mass. – Rounding the bases to the tune of a double, six triples, and a home run, the Northeastern baseball team enjoyed an outpouring of offense during Sunday's doubleheader against NYIT, sweeping it and the four-game series against the Bears with 16-7 and 8-3 victories at Friedman Diamond.
Upon taking the finale, Northeastern (20-17) improved its home winning streak to nine consecutive games, during which the Huskies have outscored their opponents, 73-28. Sunday's twin victories against NYIT (3-30-1) also raised Northeastern's record to 10-2 in doubleheaders this season, including a perfect, 6-0 mark during the opening game.
GAME ONE: Northeastern 16, NYIT 7 (seven innings)
Four crooked numbers, three of which were valued at four runs or more, provided the difference in scoring between Northeastern and NYIT as the Huskies rolled to the nine-run victory during game one.
Unable to work around
Cam Hanley's two-out single during the bottom of the first inning, NU began setting the wheels in motion during the bottom of the second as
Pat Madigan followed
Max Burt's four-pitch, leadoff walk with a single to center. After
Scott Holzwasser had successfully bunted both runners into scoring position,
Nolan Lang came through with an RBI single to right field, putting the Huskies on top, 1-0.
Although Lang would soon be caught while trying to steal second base, Northeastern continued to assemble a two-out rally, loading the bases with a pair of walks issued to
John Mazza and
Charlie McConnell. With the bags full of Huskies,
Mason Koppens delivered his third triple of the series and sixth of the season, widening the NU lead to 4-0.
Having faced the minimum through two innings,
Brian Christian ran into trouble for the first time during the top of the third inning. After an errant throw had left the Huskies unable to retire either of the Bears' first two hitters, NYIT ended up plating three runs, scoring first on Benjamin McNeill's sacrifice fly before Anthony Martelli directed a two-run homer to left field.
Christian's woes carried into the fourth inning where a pair of well-placed infield ground balls allowed the Bears to load the bases with no outs. Jeffrey Tabares tied the game at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly, two batters before Nicholas Vlahakis sent a two-RBI single into left field, giving the visitors a 6-4 advantage. Christian finished his line at three and two-thirds innings, having struck out four and allowed six unearned runs.
Trailing by two at the midway point, the NU offense brought 10 batters to the plate during the bottom of the fourth inning, rallying for five runs on two hits and five NYIT walks. Hanley closed the door to 6-5 upon receiving a bases-loaded walk from Matthew Bartnik, while a passed ball during the next at-bat allowed the Huskies to tie the game. With three ducks on the pond, Madigan pelted the second bases-clearing triple of the morning game, giving NU a 9-6 edge.
After bringing 10 batters to the plate during the fourth inning, Northeastern brought another nine to the dish during the fifth, tacking on three more runs to its total. Hanley powered a two-RBI double to left center that put NU ahead, 11-6, while
Nick Fanneron guided an RBI single up the middle, scoring Hanley to make it 12-6.
Northeastern added four more runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, returning one back to the Bears during the top of the seventh. The top three batters in the Huskies' lineup (McConnell, Koppens, and Hanley) combined to score exactly half of the squad's 16 runs.
GAME TWO: Northeastern 8, NYIT 3 (seven innings)
The Huskies' hit barrage continued during Sunday's doubleheader finale, which witnessed both teams' 11 combined runs scored during each of the first three innings.
Resuming what would end up being a four-for-six day at the plate for the NU captain,
Cam Hanley followed
Scott Holzwasser's one-out walk during the bottom of the first inning by smoking a triple down the left field line, later scoring on
Nick Fanneron's sacrifice fly.
NYIT quickly halved the Huskies' 2-0 lead to 2-1 during the top of the second as Anthony Caradonna homered down the left field line.
Jimmy Hand made his presence heard when he unleashed a one-out triple down the right field line, cueing a five-run second inning for Northeastern. With two outs,
Cam Walsh brought Hand home on an RBI single up the middle, allowing NU to regain a two-run lead. After Holzwasser drew a walk to load the bases, Hanley connected on a bases-clearing triple, widening the Huskies' edge to 6-1. Fanneron then immediately followed Hanley's triple with a three-base hit of his own, distancing Northeastern by six.
Benjamin McNeill's two-run homer brought NYIT back to within four runs of NU at 7-3, but
Pat Madigan's leadoff homer during the bottom of the third left the score where it would stand final at 8-3.
Tyler Brown,
Tyler Robinson, and
Kyle Murphy combined to toss four straight scoreless innings out of the Northeastern bullpen, with Robinson racking up four strikeouts during two hitless frames.
