BROOKLINE, Mass. – Cleanup hitter
Ryan Solomon's booming two-run homer to left field during the bottom of the third triggered a string of four straight scoring innings for the Northeastern baseball team on Friday afternoon as the Huskies won their 10th consecutive game at Friedman Diamond in 8-4 fashion against Hofstra.
Â
With two swings of the bat, Solomon single-handedly created the first three runs of the game for Northeastern (21-17, 10-3 CAA), helping the Huskies erase a 1-0, first-inning deficit. Working the count full during his first plate appearance of the day, the NU designated hitter carried a sacrifice fly to left field, deep enough to allow
Charlie McConnell to tag and score the tying run.
Â
Two innings later, Solomon again arrived at the plate with a runner at third base, this time powering a fly ball well beyond the left field wall. The two-run shot was the sophomore's second of the season and second during his last three games.
Â
Despite Friday's game housing 14 combined hits by both sides - eight by Northeastern and six by Hofstra (10-29, 3-10 CAA) - neither team managed to have a player in its lineup record multiple hits.
Â
John Mazza upped the Huskies' lead to 4-1 during the bottom of the fourth inning, bouncing an RBI double off the chalk down the left field line. Although Northeastern would follow Mazza's theatrics by loading the bases during the same inning without recording an out, NU came up empty as
Cam Hanley eventually grounded into the inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play.
Â
Nate Borges settled in to his third start of the season after surrendering a solo home run to Steven Foster on just the second pitch of the ballgame. The senior from Brooklin, Ontario, struck out the side during the top of the second inning as part of a 12-batter stretch during which the right-hander collected 12 straight outs. Despite allowing a second solo homer to Vinnie Costello to open the fifth inning, Borges finished strong and attained his third quality start of the year, striking out five across six innings of work.
Â
Northeastern held the answer to Costello's homer during the bottom of the fifth, when
Pat Madigan threaded a two-RBI triple through the gap in right center. The three-base hit - Northeastern's 12th during its last six games - marked the sixth consecutive game during which the Huskies have hit at least one triple.
Â
With Madigan at third base following his bases-clearing drive, Mazza delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, collecting his second RBI of the game while cushioning the Huskies' lead at 7-2.
Â
After Northeastern had tacked on an unearned run during the bottom of the sixth inning,
Tyler Robinson entered the game in relief of Borges. Although the junior was able to retire each of the first two batters he faced, a trio of walks allowed Hofstra to load the bases, allowing Vito Friscia to belt a two-RBI single up the middle.
Â
Tyler Brown helped Robinson out of the seventh inning and earned the final seven outs of the game, earning his first career save in the process. Brown also struck out three batters without allowing a hit.
Â
Hofstra's Teddy Cillis received the loss after allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits through four innings, despite striking out seven. The Pride's staff collectively struck out 11 NU batters, three more than the Huskies' arms were able to record.
Â
Northeastern's 10-game winning streak at Friedman Diamond ties the program record, set during the 1991 season. NU has also won 13 of its 16 games played during April.
