BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Nick Fanneron's pinch-hit, game-tying home run with two outs during the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday set the stage for
Cam Hanley to deliver the game-winning single during the next inning as the Northeastern baseball team sprang a late three-run comeback against Hofstra to walk off, 5-4, at Friedman Diamond.
Â
With the victory, Northeastern (22-17, 11-3 CAA) won its 11th straight game at Friedman Diamond, breaking the Huskies' single-season program record from 1991. NU also maintained its half-game lead on College of Charleston (12-5 CAA) for first place in the CAA standings.
Â
With Hofstra reliever John Ryan protecting the Pride's 4-2 lead, Northeastern appeared to have its comeback hopes dashed as the Huskies could not yield a base runner out of their first two batters of the ninth inning.
Max Burt was robbed of a leadoff single courtesy of Hofstra shortstop Brad Witkowski's leaping catch, while
Pat Madigan missed his mark on a 1-0 pitch, resulting in a soft pop up to third base.
Â
Down to its final strike during
Scott Holzwasser's at-bat, Northeastern found its resolve when the freshman poked a two-out single up the middle, bringing the pinch-hitter, Fanneron, to the plate as the tying run. With two prior pinch-hit homers on his season tab, the senior slugger proceeded to crush his third to the right field bleachers (fifth overall), leveling the game at 4-4.
Â
In the wake of
Andrew Misiaszek tossing a one-two-three 10th inning,
Charlie McConnell kept the momentum alive on the Huskies' side by cracking a leadoff base hit through the left side. With the Hofstra infield playing back,
Mason Koppens managed to reach safely on a slow roller towards the left side of the pitcher's mound, moving McConnell, the potential winning run, into scoring position.
Â
Hanley put both runners in motion upon slapping a roller through the left side, which turned into the game-winning hit as McConnell was waved home and slid untouched across the plate, capping off the Huskies' comeback.
Â
Like Fanneron, Holzwasser also hit his fifth home run of the season on Saturday, rocketing a two-run shot to left field during the bottom of the second inning that gave Northeastern the first lead of the game.
Â
Hofstra answered Holzwasser's homer with successive runs during the third and fourth innings, the only two runs that would be charged to NU starting pitcher
David Stiehl, who lasted five and one-third innings.
Â
Kyle Murphy aided Stiehl out of the Pride's sixth-inning rally, but surrendered a leadoff homer to Vito Friscia during the top of the seventh that put the Huskies behind, 3-2. The Pride would go on to load the bases against Murphy during the same inning and raise their lead to 4-2 on a sacrifice fly by Chris Hardardt.
Â
Brian Rodriguez dealt two shutout innings during the eighth and ninth, leaving Northeastern in contention to score the eventual tying runs.
Â
The top three batters in the Huskies' lineup accounted for seven of the team's 11 hits on Saturday. Koppens, who hit out of the second spot, went three-for-four with a sacrifice bunt.
