Baseball's home win streak ends against Hofstra

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Charlie McConnell's third-inning home run had the Northeastern baseball team out to a 2-0 lead on Sunday against Hofstra, but a quiet day at the plate left the Huskies without enough ammunition to withstand a pair of homers by the Pride as NU lost the two teams' series finale, 5-2, at Friedman Diamond.

The defeat brought Northeastern (22-18, 11-4 CAA) the conclusion of an 11-game home winning streak, which set the NU single-season record and tied for the longest in program history (14 games, 1972-73). By virtue of winning the first two games of their weekend set against Hofstra (11-30, 4-11 CAA), the Huskies had already clinched their fifth straight multi-game series victory, four of which have come against CAA competition.

McConnell's two-run homer during the bottom of the third inning was one of only two hits Northeastern was able to muster against Hofstra. With Scott Holzwasser aboard at first base upon being plunked in the back left shoulder, McConnell lifted a towering fly ball to left field, which with the wind blowing out, kept carrying over the wall to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Hofstra's Brad Witkowski responded to McConnell's two-run jack with one of his own during the top of the fifth. The Pride started the inning with a leadoff base runner courtesy of Holzwasser's errant throw at second base, which turned out to be costly. Three batters later, Witkowski directed the game-tying homer off the left field foul pole, resulting in two unearned runs for NU starting pitcher Brian Christian.

Holzwasser was quick to redeem himself on the offensive side of the diamond as the rookie bounced a 0-1 pitch off the left field wall, sliding safely into second base with his seventh double of the year. Despite taking third base on McConnell's sacrifice bunt, Holzwasser was unable to advance any further as Northeastern's second and third hitters, Mason Koppens and Cam Hanley, were both retired on strikes.

Christian had done well navigating around four Hofstra hits through his first five innings of work, but ran into a snag during the top of the sixth. Teddy Cillis' ground ball to second base took a bad bounce off Holzwasser and resulted in a leadoff single, while David Leiderman followed with a base hit up the middle.

With two runners on, Rob Weissheier proceeded to send the first pitch he received from Christian to deep left center, where Mason Koppens ran up the outfield wall to try and save the three-run homer. Koppens' defensive effort was nothing short of extraordinary as his glove made contact with Weissheier's ball, but the NU center fielder was unable to grip it as Hofstra took a 5-2 lead.

Andrew Misiaszek came on in relief of Christian and lasted three innings without allowing a run, striking out four. Mike Fitzgerald made his first pitching appearance since April 14 and tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

Jimmy Hand was the only Northeastern base runner to reach during the Huskies' final four innings at the plate, doing so at the expense of a Hofstra error.

Chris Weiss threw the final five and one-third innings for the Pride and earned the victory, striking out seven while surrendering only one hit to the Huskies (Holzwasser's double).
