Postseries Interview
BROOKLINE, Mass. –
Cam Hanley's fifth-inning homer off the center field bleachers provided the Northeastern baseball team with a 3-2 lead it would never relinquish as the Huskies won Sunday's finale against Delaware by the same score, clinching the series victory during the two teams' three-game set at Friedman Diamond.
Â
Hanley's solo shot snapped a four-game stretch for Northeastern (13-16, 6-3 CAA) without a home run, which ties its longest drought of the season. It was also one of three extra-base hits the Huskies generated against Delaware (16-14, 4-5 CAA), including
Charlie McConnell's first-inning, leadoff double and
Scott Holzwasser's fifth-inning double that took place on the first pitch following Hanley's homer.
Â
Northeastern went to work immediately against the Blue Hens' Kevin Milley during the bottom of the first inning. With McConnell aboard at second base following his sixth double of the year,
Mason Koppens and
Cam Hanley drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases for Holzwasser, the Huskies' cleanup hitter, with nobody out.
Â
Knocking on the door, Northeastern's rally appeared to lose a peg of momentum as Holzwasser grounded into a 1-2-3 double play, but all was not lost, as Delaware decided to intentionally walk the .356-hitting
Max Burt and reload the bases. The gamble worked in the Huskies' favor as
Cam Walsh delivered a two-RBI single up the middle.
Â
Brian Christian opened Sunday's game with four scoreless frames, backing Northeastern's 2-0 lead until the top of the fifth. Beginning the inning with his sixth strikeout, Christian sandwiched two walks around a single to Brian Mayer, allowing the Blue Hens to load the bases for the first time. Delaware would tie the game during the next two at-bats, scoring runs on Nick Tierno's sacrifice fly and Doug Trimble's RBI single.
Â
Despite losing the lead during the fifth, Christian caught a break on Hanley's home run during the bottom of the inning, allowing the junior right-hander to receive his fourth winning decision during his last six appearances (4-0).
Â
Kyle Murphy relieved Christian at the start of the sixth inning, tossing three hitless innings and stranding the bases loaded during the top of the seventh.
Tyler Robinson threw a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.
Â
Hanley and Holzwasser combined to go four-for-seven out of the third and fourth spots in the Huskies' batting order.
Michael Geaslen and
David Hopkins also recorded singles for Northeastern, rounding out the squad's eight-hit day.
Â
Delaware's Trimble reached base four times, going two-for-two with two walks. Mayer went two-for-three out of the ninth spot in the Blue Hens' lineup.
Â
With the victory, Northeastern remains tied with Elon (6-3) for second place in the CAA standings. Both teams trail first-place College of Charleston (7-2) by one game.
