WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Batting around during the top of the first inning, the Northeastern baseball team raced out to an early, 4-0 lead on Thursday and defended it from wire to wire as the Huskies defeated William & Mary, 6-3, at Plumeri Park to move into a tie with the Tribe for second place in the CAA.
Â
Northeastern (23-23, 12-7 CAA) received seven of its nine hits from the top five positions of its batting order, while the top four hitters in the Huskies' lineup combined to produce the squad's six runs.
Cam Hanley crossed the plate two times in addition to going two-for-four from the plate, capping off Northeastern's scoring with a seventh-inning, two-run homer that netted the senior his team-leading, 36th and 37th RBIs of the season.
Â
Rookie second baseman
Scott Holzwasser went two-for-four during his return to the Huskies' starting lineup, making his first appearance in the NU infield since April 30. Holzwasser was one of three Northeastern players to finish with multiple hits during the rainy afternoon, joining Hanley and
Max Burt, who also went two-for-four.
Â
Nate Borges limited William & Mary (28-22, 12-7 CAA) to two runs on five hits during his six-inning start, striking out four and retiring seven of the final eight batters he faced.
Tyler Brown continued Borges' work by pitching a scoreless seventh inning and collecting the first two outs of the eighth, but relinquished a trio of base hits to the Tribe that tightened the score to 6-3.
Â
Mike Fitzgerald earned the final four outs of the ballgame and picked up his 18th career save, setting the Northeastern all-time saves record in the process by breaking his tie with Dylan Maki. Fitzgerald's save was his first since May 20, 2016, when he set the program's single-season save record (11).
Â
Nick Raquet received the start for William & Mary and was on the mound during the Huskies' four-run first inning, but recovered to strike out 10 despite allowing seven hits. Offensively, eight different players combined to chart the Tribe's nine hits.
Â
Singles by
Charlie McConnell and Koppens and a five-pitch walk issued to Hanley allowed Northeastern to load the bases three batters into the game.
Ryan Solomon provided the first RBI hit of the day, sending a slapper towards the left side that left William & Mary without a play at any base. With the bags still juiced,
Jimmy Hand's ground ball to second base slipped under the glove of Cullen Large, resulting in two runs for the Huskies that gave them a 3-0 lead.
Â
Holzwasser rounded out the first-inning scoring by finding a hole through the left side, scoring Solomon and widening the visitors' advantage to 4-0.
Â
The Tribe answered Northeastern's lead with a first-inning run of their own. With Large at second base following a one-out single and a wild pitch, Ryder Miconi delivered an RBI double through the gap in right center, putting the home team on the scoreboard.
Â
William & Mary pulled a run closer during the bottom of the third inning as Brandon Raquet launched a leadoff homer to center field, trimming the Huskies' lead to 4-2.
Â
Unable to rekindle its first-inning success against Nick Raquet, Northeastern cashed in on the Tribe's first reliever, Chase Bailey, during the top of the seventh. After Koppens had drawn four straight balls to become the Huskies' one-out base runner, Hanley crushed his fourth homer of the year to left field, helping NU regain its four-run edge.
Â
With the Huskies' victory on Thursday, the road team between Northeastern and William & Mary has now won 13 of the last 14 series meetings. Â
