WILMINGTON, N.C. – In need of a win on Saturday to prolong its CAA tournament run, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to come through with a victory as the top-seeded Huskies received their second loss during the double-elimination event, 10-1, at the hands of second-seeded UNCW.
Â
Pat Madigan and
Charlie McConnell registered the only two hits on the afternoon for Northeastern (29-25), which struggled trying to figure out the Seahawks' starting right-hander, Logan Beehler. Madigan led off the top of the third with a single into left field and later scored during the same inning, while McConnell also favored left field with his eighth-inning single.
Â
Saturday's defeat brought the conclusion of an extraordinary 2017 season for the Huskies that witnessed the program hoist its first-ever CAA regular-season championship and first under the direction of the conference's Coach of the Year,
Mike Glavine. Northeastern also finished its CAA tournament stay as one of the final three teams in contention for the league's postseason crown, marking the second time NU has done so during the last five seasons.
Â
Andrew Misiaszek received the start during the Huskies' third tournament game, striking out three of the first seven batters he faced. However, Misiaszek had trouble negotiating the Seahawks during the bottom of the second as UNCW (30-28) rallied to score four runs on five hits.
Â
Robbie Thorburn delivered an RBI single before Kennard McDowell hit a two-run homer, giving the Seahawks a 3-0 lead to work with. Casey Golden followed with a two-out double, scoring the fourth run of the inning on Daniel Stack's RBI base hit.
Â
Northeastern answered back during the top of the third inning as the Huskies created some momentum behind Madigan's leadoff single.
Mason Koppens drew a four-pitch walk against Beehler, later moving into scoring position with Madigan on McConnell's ground out to the right side.
Scott Holzwasser then loaded the bases upon being dinged with a 1-2 pitch in the shoulder before Beehler walked Hanley to force in the Huskies' first run of the game.
Â
Mike Fitzgerald relieved Misiaszek after Brian Mims had recorded UNCW's seventh hit to lead off the bottom of the third. Fitzgerald would go on to claim the next two outs, but was unable to exit the inning before Mason Berne drove an RBI double into left center to widen the Seahawks' lead to 5-1.
Â
UNCW upped its advantage to 7-1 during the fourth and fifth innings, twice scoring a run on two hits.
Â
Ryan Solomon broke up Beehler's streak of nine straight retired batters upon drawing a sixth-inning walk off the redshirt-sophomore. Beehler lasted eight innings, striking out four while holding the Huskies to just two hits.
Â
Fitzgerald, who holds the Northeastern record for career appearances (87), came off the mound for the final time during his five-year career at the end of the sixth inning, having tossed four innings of relief.
Brian Rodriguez,
Tyler Robinson, and
Tom Githens brought the Huskies the rest of the way.
Â
UNCW added three runs to its total during the bottom of the eighth, earning one on a wild pitch and two on Mims' RBI double.
Â
Northeastern will graduate nine members of its 2017 senior class.
