AMHERST, Mass. – Matt Murray stopped 29 shots and Mitchell Chaffee scored twice as Massachusetts (11-10-1, 5-6-1) ended No. 8/9 Northeastern men's hockey's nine-game unbeaten streak, 3-0, on Friday night at the Mullins Center.

The Huskies (14-6-3, 10-4-1) controlled play during the opening frame, outshooting the Minutemen 15-7, but it was all UMass from there, which found the back of the net twice in the middle frame before adding another early in the third period.

Chaffee gave the hosts the 1-0 lead midway through the game with a redirection off a shot from the point before adding his second of the evening on the power play five minutes later on a one-timer from the left side. Austin Plevy put Massachusetts up by three less than four minutes into the third with his third of the year on a one-timer in front.

The Huskies, who were forced to kill seven penalties throughout the night, including two five-minute majors, received 29 saves from freshman Cayden Primeau in the loss. NU was 0-of-2 on the man advantage and won 32-of-52 face-offs, including a 15-of-21 showing from Adam Gaudette.

Goal descriptions
FIRST GOAL (1-0 Massachusetts) – SECOND PERIOD – Mitchell Chaffee – 11:19
Massachusetts drew first blood midway through the game on Chaffee's eighth of the year. With the Minutemen controlling the puck in the attacking zone, Jake Gaudet worked the puck up to Ivan Chukarov at the right point. Chukarov then took a couple strides along the blue line before sending a low shot towards the cage that Chaffee redirected home for the score

SECOND GOAL (2-0 Massachusetts) – SECOND PERIOD – Michell Chaffee – 15:52 (PP)
The Minutemen struck again less than five minutes later with a power play tally, again from Chaffee. After the Huskies were assessed a five-minute major penalty, UMass wasted no time in converting as Oliver Chau fired a puck to John Leonard down low. Leonard then quickly threaded a pass over to Mitchell at the far post for the 2-0 lead.

THIRD GOAL (3-0 Massachusetts) – THIRD PERIOD – Austin Plevy – 3:23
UMass took a three-goal lead early in the third period when Mario Ferraro battled to keep the puck in the attacking zone before dancing down the left wall and finding Plevy alone in front for the one-timer that Primeau five-hole.
