MBB returns home to face Charleston Thursday

Northeastern will look to stay in first place in the CAA with a win over the Cougars

Promotions     Fraternity & Sorority Life Night: The Northeastern men's basketball team is inviting all Northeastern fraternities and sororities to Matthews Arena to participate on FSL Night and cheer on the Huskies as they take on College of Charleston.

The fraternity or sorority that has the highest percentage of spirited fans will be awarded $1,000 to the philanthropy of its choosing.

BOSTON – The month of February will kick off at home for the Northeastern men's basketball team when they host Charleston and UNCW at Matthews Arena this weekend.
 
The Huskies will face each of the teams for the second time this season and are looking to split with the Cougars while trying to sweep the Seahawks for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
 
Northeastern is coming off of a tough 68-67 loss at Drexel on Saturday afternoon, their first loss in five outings, but picked up a big win at Hofstra on Thursday night.
 
The men's basketball program is also looking for its 1200th win as a program since the team was founded way back in the 1920-21 season, the team has accumulated 1,198 in its first 98 seasons.
 
NOTABLES
• This is the 98th season of Northeastern men's basketball
• Northeastern has an all-time record of 1,198-1,099 (.522) in 2,297 games
• The Huskies are 383-256 (.599) all-time in conference play including a 125-86 (.592) record since joining the CAA in the 2005-06 season
• Northeastern amassed 12 regular season conference championships and eight tournament titles including a 2015 CAA title which sent NU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 24 years
Bill Coen is in his 12th season as the leader of the Huskies and since Coen has taken the reins, Northeastern has accomplished the best win percentage amongst current CAA teams in conference and CAA tournament play with a 126-99 all-time mark
Vasa Pusica has been dishing them out for the Huskies this season  including a career-best 10 assist effort against Hofstra, because of him the Huskies have their fifth 100-assist player in the last four seasons
• The Huskies named a new director of athletics and recreation last Wednesday morning as Jeff Konya will take over for Peter Roby on February 1
Shawn Occeus currently leads the CAA in thefts this season with 2.09 steals per game, a mark that also ranks in the top of the NCAA
• The Huskies have recorded nine 80-point efforts this season, the most in a single season during the Bill Coen era
 
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
• Heading into Thursday night's matchup with the Huskies, Charleston is 16-6 on the season and, like the Huskies, 7-3 in conference action
• The winner of the game will retain rights to first place in the CAA
• Charleston is 11-0 at home but only 4-5 on the road this season, including a 1-3 conference record
• The three blemishes have come at Drexel in overtime, at Towson and at Elon while the Cougars fell to Wichita State and URI on the road during the non-conference slate
 
LEADING THE WAY
• Charleston is led, once again, by Joe Chealey who is averaging 18.6 points and 3.6 assists a game while pulling down 108 rebounds and making 17 steals on the year
• Jarrell Brantley, who has played every game of the conference season is averaging 15.9 points and 6.6 rebounds a game this season
• Grant Riller has added 15.5 points per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field while Nick Harris has added a team leading 7.2 rebounds a game
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
• This will be the 10th meeting between the two teams with the Huskies posting a 5-4 record over the Cougars since the series began in the 2013-14 season
• The two teams have split the season series in  three of the previous four seasons with the Huskies coming away with a sweep in the 2014-15 campaign
• Charleston has won the last two outings between the teams
 
LAST TIME VS. CHARLESTON
• Despite four different Huskies registering double-figures and all 11 Huskies getting on the board, Northeastern fell 82-66 at the College of Charleston
The Huskies and Cougars were neck-and-neck for much of the first half, but a late 7-0 run helped Charleston to a 10-point halftime lead
• In the second half, the Charleston defense locked down the Huskies for five minutes as the Cougars built up their 16-point lead for the win
Vasa Pusica led the Huskies with 15 points and six assists, his seventh-straight game with 4+ assists, while also going 6-for-6 from the free throw line
Bolden Brace added 13 points on a 3-of-5 effort from deep and a pair of steals while Shawn Occeus and Tomas Murphy each chipped in 10 points on the night
• Charleston was led by Jarrell Brantley's 22 points and six rebounds while Joe Chealey added 16 points, the majority of which came from the free throw line, and Grant Riller and Jaylen McManus each added 12

CREEPING UP ON 1,200
• The Northeastern men's basketball team currently has 1,198 program victories heading into Thursday's game with Charleston
• After it took 14 seasons to earn the first 100 wins in program history, the Huskies have picked up steam in the last few decades
• Head Coach Bill Coen helped the Huskies to its 1100th victory back in the 2011-12 season

DISHING IT OUT
Vasa Pusica has been the catalyst to the Huskies leading the way in conference action in assists per game
• The redshirt junior transfer finished Thursday's game against Hofstra with a career-high 10 assists and currently has 107 assists on the season
• With Pusica crossing the century mark, it marks four-straight seasons for the Huskies with at least one player dishing out 100 dimes
