BOSTON – Thanks in part to a season-high 14 3-pointers, the Northeastern men's basketball team upended James Madison Sunday afternoon 80-67 at Matthews Arena.
Five different Huskies connected on the 14 treys, led by
Shawn Occeus who finished with 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from behind the arc while also adding five assists and three rebounds on the day.
The Huskies also finished with a season-high 24 assists in the game, the most since dishing out 29 on Jan. 5 of last season against Delaware, a game that saw a school record 21 threes fall.
Leading the way with a career-high nine helpers was
Vasa Pusica who also added 12 points and three steals on the day.
The two teams were neck and neck through the first 20 minutes of action as the Huskies had just a five-point lead at the half thanks to some pressure defense by the Dukes.
But as soon as the second half began, the Huskies were out to a 21-point lead thanks to a handful of threes from
Maxime Boursiquot (13 points) and Donnell Gresham (nine points) and never looked back en route to the victory.
The Huskies held Stuckey Mosley, who entered the game averaging 20.4 points per game (2
nd CAA) on a CAA-best 51 threes, to just 11 points and one trey on the day. Darius Banks led the Dukes with 16 points in the outing while adding three rebounds and three steals.
FIRST HALF
After JMU opened up the half with a pair of baskets to get out to a 5-0 lead, what would be its largest lead of the day, the Huskies responded firing off back-to-back treys to claim the lead for good. With the Dukes doubling Pusica, Occeus was left wide open and sent one in from deep. On the following possession Pusica did the same, and following a JMU trey, Gresham answered with a three of his own for the 9-8 lead.
A couple of
Tomas Murphy layups helped the Huskies to a 9-2 run to build a 15-10 lead early in the half. The Huskies extended that lead to as much as eight midway through the stanza on a
Devon Begley layup, his first of three in the half.
JMU was able to get the lead down to just one basket, but the Huskies rebuilt it back to eight on an Occeus layup, thanks to an offensive board by
Bolden Brace, keeping JMU at bay for the remainder of the half and heading into the locker room at halftime with a five-point 36-31 lead.
SECOND HALF
Both Boursiquot and Gresham started the second half hot from downtown each hitting a pair of threes which helped the Huskies build up their lead to 14 points, 50-36 at the under-16 media.
The Huskies ultimately started the second half off on a 23-7 run, with 10 of those points coming from Boursiquot, and got out to as much as a 21-point lead, 59-38, with 14 minutes left in the game. The Dukes cut that lead down with a 9-0 run, but an Occeus three from the corner ended that stretch.
The teams traded baskets, and a Pusica three from the corner, followed by a Brace fastbreak dunk, his first of the season, helped the Huskies back to a 16-point advantage.
Following the final media timeout, Pusica headed to the line where he made the first free throw attempt but but missed the second. Ready and waiting was Boursiquot was there for the offensive tip-out, Occeus gathered the board and with his second chance, Pusica hit the teams season-high 13th three of the game.
Occeus followed that up with the Huskies' 14
th three of the day and a
Derrick Cook layup made it a 21-point game with just under two minutes to go.
JMU was able to score the last eight points of the day as the Huskies came away with the 80-67 victory.
