MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Seeking to become the first team during program history to win seven consecutive matches, the Northeastern women's soccer team was unfortunately denied by College of Charleston on Sunday as the Huskies lost their first CAA match of the season to the Cougars, 2-1, at the Soccer Stadium at Patriots Point.
Â
Ali Freitas opened the scoring for Charleston during the 27th minute, controlling the Huskies' outgoing header at the top of the 18-yard box and completing her 15-yard finish to the bottom right post. The play ended Northeastern's stretch of 522:37 season minutes without conceding an opposing goal.
Â
With less than two minutes remaining before halftime,
Katarina Nilsson leveled the match at 1-1 from a similar location. The sophomore clawed her way to
Mikenna McManus' corner kick delivery at the top of the 18-yard box and rifled her attempt through to the top left corner for her fourth CAA goal of the season.
Â
Northeastern (9-7-1, 6-1-0 CAA) successfully fended off nine second half attempts by College of Charleston (9-6-1, 4-2-1 CAA) until Laura Ortega managed to produce the match-winner during the 85th minute. Ortega's 20-yard ball took a deflection off the Huskies' back line, meeting
Nathalie Nidetch's gloves at the goal line before it bounced off the crossbar and in.
