ORONO, Maine – With rookie sensations
Alina Mueller and
Chloe Aurard leading the offensive charge, the fifth-ranked Northeastern women's hockey team won its 10th consecutive game, 3-1, over Maine on Friday evening at Alfond Arena.
Â
Aurard opened the scoring for Northeastern (11-1-1, 10-0-1 WHEA) at 12:04 during the first period, cleaning up the rebound from
Kasidy Anderson and
Veronika Pettey's previous tries that had both been saved by Carly Jackson. The goal – Aurard's fifth of the season – justified the Huskies' 14-8 edge in shots on goal during the opening stanza while also extending the freshman's point streak to six straight games.
Â
Mueller proceeded to double Aurard's production during the second period, cashing in on a pair of goals to give NU a 3-0 lead and extend her point-streak to 12 straight games.Â
Â
The Swiss native scored first during four-on-four play at 5:56 into the period before finding the net again on the power play at 19:19. Aurard and
Brooke Hobson were credited with the assists on Mueller's second goal - her first collegiate two-goal game.Â
Â
Maine (7-6-0, 3-6-0 WHEA) spoiled
Aerin Frankel's shutout bid at 11:12 during the third period, when Celine Tedenby put the Black Bears on the scoreboard. Frankel finished the night having made 23 saves – two of which were recorded after Maine had brought on an extra attacker with 56 seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Penalties stole the show throughout the contest, particularly during the opening minutes of the first and second periods. Northeastern tied its season highs for penalties (six) and penalty minutes (12), but went six-for-six during kills, improving its 2018-19 penalty kill percentage to 96.2 percent (51-for-53).
