DAVIDSON, N.C.– In a game that came down to the final minutes, Davidson was able to hang on and pull out a 78-69 victory over the Northeastern men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.
The Huskies turned a late 12-point deficit into just a three-point game, on a
Jordan Roland trey with three-and-a-half minutes to go, 69-66. But the Wildcats were able to hang on, knocking down their free throws down the stretch, to come away with the win for the second time in six days.
Roland had his second 20-point effort of the season, finishing with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including a 6-of-9 mark from deep. Roland also added a pair of steals and rebounds in the outing. Three other Huskies hit the double-digit scoring mark in the game as
Tomas Murphy finished with 12, Donnell Gresham added 11, four assists, four rebounds, and a pair of steals, and
Bolden Brace finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Kellan Grady led the way for Davidson finishing with 30 points, 15 coming in each half, while Jon Axel Gudmundsson added 16, including 10-straight to close out the game for the Wildcats.
FIRST HALF
The first half was a half of runs, for both squads. Following a couple Davidson baskets to begin things, Roland knocked down a pair of treys to help the Huskies gain the advantage as Northeastern broke out on a 9-0 run early on.
After the Huskies' run, Davidson came away with an 8-0 run of its own that was halted by the hot shooting Roland. Roland drilled a three to end the run, then hit another, his fourth of the game, to give the Huskies a three-point lead.
After some back-and-forth play between the two teams, Kellan Grady came to life for Davidson scoring 11 of his 15 first half points in the final eight-and-a-half minutes. Back-to-back dunks by
Anthony Green kept the Huskies within three, but Northeastern headed to the locker room with Davidson ahead 41-32 at the half.
SECOND HALF
Davidson netted the first two baskets of the second half, building upon their lead and growing a 13-2 run that spanned halftime, forcing
Bill Coen to call a timeout with 18:11 remaining.
With Davidson out to a 52-38 lead, the Huskies went on the hunt, rallying off eight-straight points, six coming from Roland including a four-point play, to make it a 52-46 game, forcing Davidson into calling a timeout to settle things.
The Wildcats built up a 12-point advantage, but a
Bolden Brace three, followed by a
Shaquille Walters three-point play cut that lead back down to just five, 65-60, with just over five minutes to go. A Roland three made it a three-point game with three-and-a-half to go, but Davidson was able to hang on, and make their free throws down the stretch, for the 78-69 victory.
The Huskies, who entered the game as the best free throw shooting team in the nation, were just 17-of-26 from the charity stripe against Davidson.
