BOSTON – The No. 5 Northeastern women's hockey team (11-1-2, 10-0-2 WHEA) will look to extend its NCAA-best, 11-game unbeaten streak on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when No. 4 Boston College (12-3-0, 9-1-0 WHEA) visits Matthews Arena for the first of three scheduled regular season meetings. The game will be televised live on NESN.
QUICK HITS
• This will be the first top-five matchup between NU and BC in nearly three years to the day; the last meeting in which both teams were ranked fifth or higher came on Nov. 28, 2015 when the No. 2 Eagles beat the No. 4 Huskies at Matthews Arena.
• Northeastern will be looking to snap an eight-game winless skid against Boston College (0-7-1) at Matthews Arena. The last time the Huskies beat the Eagles on home ice was in the 2013 Beanpot Final when No. 10 Northeastern edged No. 2 Boston College, 4-3.
• Tuesday's showdown will be a matchup of the top two scoring offenses and scoring defenses in Hockey East. Northeastern leads the league in scoring at 3.50 goals per game, while BC ranks second at 3.20. The Eagles pace the league (and rank second nationally) in scoring defense at 1.27 goals against per game, while NU ranks second in WHEA (and third nationally) at 1.36.
• The Huskies are 2-1-0 against top-10 opponents this season, splitting a home series vs. No. 8/7 Colgate on Oct. 12-13 and beating No. 10 Maine on Oct. 19. Northeastern last defeated a top-five opponent on Jan. 12, 2018 when the Huskies topped No. 2 Boston College on the road, 4-2.
• The Huskies took three out of four points in Orono, Maine last time out, earning a 3-1 win on Nov. 16 and a 3-3 tie the following day. All six goals over the weekend were scored by freshmen, including three from
Chloe Aurard, two from
Alina Mueller and the first collegiate tally by
Mia Brown.
• With last weekend's results, the Huskies extended their unbeaten streak to 11 straight games, which is NU's longest run without a loss since a 14-game winning streak during the 2015-16 season. During their 11-game unbeaten streak, the Huskies have outscored their opponents by a 39-13 margin.
• NU owns the No. 2 ranked penalty-kill in the nation at 94.6 percent, having successfully negated 53 of 56 penalties this season. The Huskies are also tied for the national lead in shorthanded goals with three.
• Northeastern is 11-0-0 when scoring the first goal this season, compared to 0-1-2 when conceding first. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, NU is 25-0-2 when scoring the first goal.
• NU's
Aerin Frankel and BC's Maddie McArthur are tied for the national lead with four shutouts each. Frankel has played seven fewer games than McArthur and leads the NCAA with a 0.72 GAA and a .972 save percentage in seven starts.
• Frankel has been even tougher in Hockey East play, owning a 6-0-0 record with a 0.33 GAA and a .986 save percentage (146 saves on 148 shots) against league opponents this season.
• Frankel has twice been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 8, Oct. 29), and was also honored as both the Hockey East Player of the Month for October and the Commissioner's Association National Goaltender of the Month for October.
• Freshmen
Alina Mueller (21 points) and
Chloe Aurard (19 points) are the top two rookie scorers in the nation this season. Mueller is currently riding a 13-game point-streak and has scored eight goals in her last nine games. Aurard is riding a seven-game point-streak and has recorded five straight multi-point efforts.
• Mueller leads all NCAA freshmen in goals (9), assists (12), points (21), power-play points (8), game-winning goals (3) and plus-minus (+14). The Switzerland native has twice been named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week in Hockey East (Nov. 5, Nov. 12), as well as the league's Rookie of the Month for October and the Commissioner's Association National Rookie of the Month for October.
• NU owns the second-highest scoring rookie class in the nation with 45 points from first-year players. Only No. 2 Minnesota (47 points) has gotten more production from freshmen, however the Gophers have played two more games.
