Coen/Pusica Postgame
BOSTON – Though the Northeastern men's basketball team gained as much as a 12-point lead on Boston University early in the second half, the Terriers never gave up, fighting back in the final minutes to steal a game away from Northeastern 77-74 in the season opener at Matthews Arena on Tuesday night.
Vasa Pusica led the way for Northeastern with his first 30-point effort of the season, and fourth of his career, finishing with 31 points, and six assists on the night.
Anthony Green and
Bolden Brace added near-double-doubles as Green finished with 10 points and eight boards and Brace put up eight points and a team-leading nine rebounds on the night.
BU was led by Tyler Scanlon who hit the ultimate game-winning basket, finishing with 16 points and eight rebounds while Jordan Guest added 13 points and Max Mahoney finished with 12 points and six boards.
FIRST HALF
Vasa Pusica led the way for the Huskies netting 16 of Northeastern's 33 first-half points, with 12 of those coming in the first eight minutes of action. Transfer
Jordan Roland, after sitting out last season, picked up his first career start with the Huskies and added five points and in the first 20 minutes of play.
At the under-12 media, the game was knotted at 14-all but Boston University managed to pull away and take a five-point lead. Coming out of the under-8 the Huskies tallied back-to-back baskets, forcing BU head coach Joe Jones to call a timeout to settle things and the Terriers were able to extend that lead back out to three, but a layup by Pusica and three from Roland gave the Huskies a two-point lead.
Seven ties and six lead changes in 20 minutes, and a slam from
Anthony Green as time expired put the Huskies up 36-33 at the half over the Terriers.
SECOND HALF
Back-to-back treys by Pusica and
Bolden Brace broke the game open for the Huskies in the second half forcing Jones into his second timeout of the game with 16:25 remaining and Northeastern up 45-38.
Northeastern gained as much as a 12-point lead with 12:43 left in the second half, but the Terriers never relented using a late three to make it a two-point game and continued that into a 6-0 run to take a 71-70 edge with 48 seconds to go.
After some free throws made it a three-point game, Pusica came down, and attempted a three to which he was fouled. He made a pair and BU still clung to a 75-74 lead. After an immediate foul, some more free throws and a missed trey down the stretch the Terriers came away with the comeback victory.
