Recap
BOSTON– Led by three 20-point efforts from
Vasa Pusica,
Jordan Roland and
Anthony Green, the Northeastern men's basketball team earned its seventh-straight CAA opening victory via a 93-83 win over Drexel Friday night at Matthews Arena.
Pusica finished with 29 points on the night while Roland and Green each netted 21, the first time in nearly 12 years that a Husky trio has each finished with 20+ points.
That last outing came on Dec. 31, 2006 at Boston College when Bennet Davis (27), Matt Janning (21) and Eugene Spates (20) achieved the feat during
Bill Coen's first season as head coach of the Huskies.
In addition to Green's career-high 21 points, he also pulled down 11 rebounds, marking his first double-double of the year, fourth of his career and his first such 20-10 effort. Both Roland and Pusica added four assists.
Drexel was led by Troy Harper who finished with 28 points, including a 10-of-11 effort from the charity stripe.
FIRST HALF
After Drexel got out to a 19-14 lead midway through the first, Northeastern used a 10-0 run over a two minute stretch to take a five-point, 24-19 lead.
Pusica was a big part of the Husky offense during that span and down the stretch, accounting for 12 points in the 17-6 run that made it a 30-25 game with five minutes to go. He would finish with 19 first half points as the Huskies finished the stanza with a 41-36 advantage.
SECOND HALF
Northeastern started the second half off a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 2-of-2 from deep, both coming from Roland.
A 6-0 run from the Huskies, in the form of a Pusica jumper, Green dunk and Roland jumper forced Drexel to call its second timeout of the game with 12:48 to go and the Huskies up 63-54, the team's largest lead of the game.
Drexel chipped away at the Husky lead and made it a two-point game, 68-66 with 7:55 to go after a Camren Wynter bucket, but Northeastern responded with a trey from
Shawn Occeus, a trey from Roland and a slam from Green that forced Drexel into another timeout, only for the Dragons to see another trey from Roland fall following the break.
The Huskies continued on to claim their seventh-straight CAA opening victory.
