Denton, Texas – Northeastern (1-1) split a pair of games on Friday evening at the North Texas Invitational. The Huskies swept Grambling State (0-2) and dropped a match to North Texas (2-0) in their first two matches of the 2018 season.
NU vs. GRAMBLING STATE
Leading the pack,
Taylor Reiter and
Hannah Boyd tallied nine kills apiece and 9.5 and 105 points, respectively.
Samantha Shupe set the Huskies up for success with 35 assists.
The Howlin' Huskies took an early lead, 8-6, over the Tigers in the first set. They held ahead through the end of the set to take the first, 25-18.
NU fell behind Grambling State early in the second set and continued trailing upon a steady comeback to tie the score at 20. The Huskies came out of an close battle on top, 25-23, to take the second set.
Running with their momentum, NU started the third set with another early lead, 11-6. They finished the set ahead with an eventual 25-18 win, giving them the match sweep.
NU at NORTH TEXAS
Northeastern dropped their second game at the North Texas Invitational to the Mean Green, 3-0.
Boyd led the Huskies on the entire day with 13 kills and 14.0 points. Shupe again tallied the most assists with 36.
North Texas started the first set with an early advantage that they kept throughout the set, leading the Huskies to lose, 25-17.
A service ace by
Sherrie Wang kept the Huskies in play during the second set, bringing them close behind the Mean Green, 8-6. However, North Texas extended their lead to eventually take the set, 25-14.
The Howlin' Huskies gained some momentum in the third set with an early, 7-3 lead with Boyd tallying big kills to put them ahead. They ultimately lose a close battle, 25-21.
