BROOKLINE, Mass. – Valentina Soares Gache's dramatic, 35-yard golden goal during double overtime of Thursday night's derby against Boston University prompted the Northeastern women's soccer team to storm the pitch at Parsons Field and dogpile its senior midfielder as the Huskies successfully completed the 3-2, come-from-behind victory while downing their crosstown rival.
Â
Soares Gache ripped the match-winning goal during the 104th minute, receiving the right-to-left pass from
Emily Evangelista on the left side of the midfield before right-footing her strike to the opposite crossbar and in. The goal marked her first of the 2018 season and the fourth of her career.
Â
Hannah Rosenblatt put Northeastern (2-3-0) on the board first during the 15th minute, cleaning up the rebound from
Kerri Zerfoss' header that had followed
Mikenna McManus' corner from the right flag.
Â
Boston University (0-5-0) scored twice before halftime, receiving goals from McKenna Doyle (24th minute) and Anna Heilferty (38th minute).
Â
Nicole Gorman drew the Huskies level during the second half, bulleting a 20-yard strike from the top of the box off the right netting.
Â
With the game tied at 2-2, both teams entertained a physical, attacking style of play. Northeastern was narrowly outshot, 20-19, by BU, yet finished with nine attempts on target to the Terriers' eight.
Â
Nathalie Nidetch made four saves for the Huskies, swapping spots with
Megan Adams at halftime.
