DEDHAM, Mass. – A pair of goals from
Camille O'Conor helped the Northeastern field hockey team to its first victory of the season, and the first of the
Shelly Morris era, with a 2-1 win over Holy Cross at Dedham Field Friday night.
O'Conor provided the scoring for the Huskies, who took 30 shots as a squad on the night, 18 of which came on goal.
Julia Gluyas, who finished the night with four saves, made a number of game-changing plays to help solidify the victory between the pipes.
Holy Cross netminder Marcia LaPlante helped keep the Northeastern scoring under control coming away with 16 saves in the game.
The Huskies took a 2-0 advantage at halftime, thanks in full to O'Conor. The sophomore got the Huskies on the board in the 25
th minute of action with her second goal of the season. Off of the Huskies' third penalty corner attempt,
Kellie Stigas sent a hard shot in front of the net that O'Conor intercepted and redirected into the goal for the first score of the night.
She added to her total, when she was once again in the right place at the right time, corralling in a save off of a
Lexie Dunleavy shot and sending it right back into the goal to add to the Huskies' total less than a minute before the half.
Holy Cross cut the lead in half in the 42
nd minute of action with a goal by Olivia Venezia to make it a 2-1 game and had a handful of chances to even the score, including a pair of back-to-back attempts with less than three minutes remaining, but the heads up goal play of Gluyas helped to save the win for the Huskies.
Tonight marked the second multi-goal game of O'Conor's career with the last coming against Bryant on Aug. 27, 2017. That game ended up as the 400
th victory of Cheryl Murtagh's career. Tonight marked the first victory of the Morris era at Northeastern.
The Huskies will be back in action next Sunday, Sept. 9, at Dedham Field, when preseason No. 14 Wake Forest comes to town at Noon. As always, admission is free to all.
