BOSTON – Despite combining
Alexis Hill's near double-double on Saturday with season scoring highs by
Stella Clark and
Shannon Todd, the Northeastern women's basketball team was unable to shake off its halftime deficit against Dayton as the Huskies received the 71-60 defeat at Cabot Center.
Â
Hill tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks to lead Northeastern (0-3), which totaled 12 steals – two shy of its season high from the 2018-19 season. Clark paced the Huskies with 17 points in addition to registering six rebounds, four assists and a career high, five steals.
Â
Todd drained three 3-pointers during her nine-point first quarter, finishing with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Â
Northeastern trailed by as many as eight points during the first half, trimming its first-quarter deficit to 15-13 after Clark had served Todd a pair of 3-point balls. The Huskies' defense managed to deny the Flyers a point during a six-minute stretch midway through the second quarter, but conceded two baskets within the final 30 seconds of the half to trail, 32-24, at the break.
Â
Jayla Scaife's 3-pointer two minutes into the third quarter provided Dayton (3-1) with its first double-digit lead, which it preserved until the final horn. She posted 24 points, 10 rebounds and three steals to lead the Flyers.
NU forced Dayton into committing 26 turnovers, but was only able to yield the 16-11 advantage in points off turnovers. The Huskies claimed 15 offensive rebounds, but ended the night -5 in rebounding margin.
