CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With
Samantha Michel at the center of its 12-0, second-quarter run on Wednesday morning, the Northeastern women's basketball team battled back to knock off women's mid-major No. 19 Harvard, 46-44, during a high-energy, mid-morning rivalry affair at Lavietes Pavilion.
Â
With Northeastern (2-6) weathering a one-for-20 shooting mark from the perimeter until the game's final minute,
Stella Clark caught Harvard (6-3) napping at the 3-point line with 36.5 seconds to go, hitting the jumper that gave the Huskies the late two-point advantage. Clark's shot went down as the final points for either side as NU denied the Crimson during each of their three ensuing attempts at the potential game-winning and game-tying baskets.
Â
Shannon Todd matched Clark for the team-high scoring line at 11 points and racked up eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. Michel and
Alexis Hill chipped in 10 points apiece for the Huskies while registering nine and five rebounds, respectively.
Â
Upon checking in during the second quarter, Michel provided Northeastern with six of its 12 unanswered points, helping the Huskies steal the 24-20 lead from the Crimson before halftime. After Harvard had clawed back to take the 27-24 lead with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter, Northeastern effectively shut down the Crimson, scoring 11 straight points to carry the 35-27 lead into the final period.
Â
Despite Harvard turning in a 9-0 run during the fourth quarter to wipe away the Huskies' 42-35 lead, the NU defense stepped up down the stretch, keeping the Crimson off the scoreboard across their final three possessions.
Â
Lola Mullaney led Harvard with 17 points while Jeannie Boehm snagged 12 rebounds.
Â
Wednesday's win marked Northeastern's first against Harvard during its sixth attempt since December 2006.
