BOSTON
– Behind a two-goal game from Skylar Fontaine and 31 saves from Aerin Frankel, the Northeastern women's hockey team clinched the Hockey East regular season title with a 3-1 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon earning the title for the second time in program history (2012).

The win also marks the second time the Huskies (22-4-4, 20-2-2) have accumulated 20 Hockey East wins in the history of the program, the 2015-16 squad finished 20-4-0 in league play en route to an NCAA tournament appearance.

Frankel finished with 31 saves and allowed just the one goal and improving her record in WHEA games to an outstanding 16-0-0. The multi-goal effort from Fontaine was the first of her career.

Providence (19-10-2, 13-9-2) was led by Meaghan Rickard who had the Friars' lone goal of the game while Madison Myers registered 26 saves on the day.

Just three minutes into the game the Huskies picked up their first power play opportunity of the day and immediately capitalized less than 30 seconds later when Codie Cross scooped up the puck behind her own net, skated halfway down the ice and dished off a pass to Fontaine who finished with a beautiful wrist shot to make it a 1-0 game.

Before the first period was up, Matti Hartman made it a 2-0 game for the Huskies, tracking down Providence's attempt to clear it out, crossing over both blue lines and softly sending it in from the right side and past the PC netminder for her fifth goal of the year.

Providence got one back in the second period, utilizing the Huskies' first penalty of the game to pick up a power play goal when Meaghan Rickard netted her seventh goal of the year.  Frankel was tested early and often in the second, making 12 saves, including seven in the first five minutes of action alone.

Fontaine added another goal in the third period, marking her first ever multi-goal effort to give the Huskies some breathing room en route to the historic victory. The sophomore, who entered the game as the third-leading scorer among Hockey East defenders this season, added another two points to her total (24) to move past teammate Brooke Hobson (23) into second place with her multi-goal effort.

The two points earned from today's victory, sets a new program record for most points in a Hockey East season. The Huskies currently have 42 points in the league standings, which betters the program record set by the 2015-16 team (40).
