Recap
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Led by
Cam Walsh's three-hit afternoon and
Corey DiLoreto's twin extra-base hits, the Northeastern baseball team outmuscled South Dakota State to earn the 12-9 victory during Saturday's combined 26-hit affair at the 2019 Snowbird Baseball Classic.
Â
Northeastern (3-2) scored during all but three innings against South Dakota State (3-3), racking up crooked numbers during the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Jeff Costello's sixth-inning sacrifice fly provided the Huskies with their largest lead of the game at 10-4, although late-game homers by the Jackrabbits' Luke Ira and Landon Badger left enough room for
Andrew Misiaszek to pick up the four-out save – the 21st of his career (ties
Mike Fitzgerald's program record).
Â
Walsh registered three RBIs as Northeastern's leadoff man, singling home
John Mazza during the top of the third inning to knot the score at 1-1. Two innings later, the NU designated hitter plated two unearned runs to cap the Huskies' three-run rally, bringing Costello and
Ryan Solomon both in to put Northeastern ahead, 9-4.
Â
DiLoreto provided the Huskies with their final lead of the day during Northeastern's four-run third inning.
Â
The redshirt-freshman extended his career-opening hitting streak to five games upon knocking his two-RBI, ground-rule double to center field that put NU in front, 3-1. He also belted a one-out triple during the sixth inning that led to him scoring the Huskies' 10th run of the ballgame.
Â
Brandon Dufault struck out four batters while allowing four runs across four innings pitched, receiving the winning decision via pitch count.
Brian Rodriguez fired three strikeouts across two-and-one-third innings pitched while
Kyle Murphy followed Friday's start against the Boston Red Sox with a scoreless relief appearance.
Â
Braeden Brown led South Dakota State with three hits. Five of the Jackrabbits' 14 hits landed for extra bases.
