PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – With senior first baseman
Jake Farrell and redshirt-freshman outfielder
Corey DiLoreto combining for six RBIs, the Northeastern baseball team scored an eventful, 13-7 win against South Dakota State on Sunday at the 2019 Snowbird Baseball Classic, completing the two-game sweep of the Jackrabbits.
Â
Farrell went three-for-four to lead Northeastern (4-2), which remained undefeated during its non-conference weekend in southern Florida. The NU veteran belted a pair of RBI singles and ran the bases well, scoring three runs.
Â
DiLoreto continued his power-hitting tear, swinging an RBI double during the seventh inning and a two-RBI triple during the ninth inning. Upon recording his fourth multi-hit outing of the season, the first six-foot-four slugger has now hit safely during each of his first six career appearances.
Â
Sean Mellen struck out eight batters before departing after four innings with NU trailing, 2-1.
David Stiehl fired three strikeouts across three relief innings, receiving the win after the Huskies plated four runs during the bottom of the fifth inning.
Â
South Dakota State (3-4) utilized a bases-loaded rally during the top of the eighth inning to trim Northeastern's lead down from 8-3 to 8-7. However, the Huskies responded with another big inning of offense, scoring five runs during the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
