BOSTON – The Hockey East regular season champion Northeastern women's hockey team (23-5-5) will open postseason play this weekend in a best-of-three quarterfinal series against No. 8 seed Vermont at Matthews Arena. Game one is set for Friday at 5 p.m., game two is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., and game three (if necessary) is set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. All three games will be televised live on NESNplus.
QUICK HITS
• The Huskies went 3-0-0 against the Catamounts during the regular season, and held UVM to exactly one goal in each of the three games (4-1, 2-1, 5-1).
• Northeastern has advanced beyond the quarterfinal round of the WHEA playoffs in each of the last eight seasons. The Huskies are 11-3-0 all-time in the quarterfinals, including a 1-0-0 record against Vermont (5-1 win in 2013). NU has won eight straight quarterfinal games dating back to a 2-1 loss to UNH in game one of the 2015 quarters.
• Head coach
Dave Flint enters the weekend with 198 career wins at Northeastern. If the Huskies advance to the semifinals with two wins, Flint will become the second coach in program history to reach 200 victories on Huntington Avenue (Don MacLeod won 210 games from 1981-92).
• Flint is 16-8-0 all-time in the Hockey East playoffs. Last year, Flint guided Northeastern to a 4-0-0 mark in the WHEA playoffs as the Huskies claimed the tournament crown for the first time in program history with a 2-1 victory over No. 7 seed UConn in the championship game.
• Northeastern is coming off its most successful Hockey East season since joining the league in 2002. The Huskies went 21-3-3 in WHEA play, setting new program records for most league wins in a single season and most league points (45) in a WHEA campaign.
• The Huskies have been tough to beat at Matthews Arena all season, holding a 13-2-0 home record in 2018-19. Northeastern won 12 straight home games before a 5-2 setback against Providence on Feb. 17, which represented the third-longest single-season home winning streak in program history.
• NU owns the top scoring offense in Hockey East (and sixth-best offense in the nation) at 3.48 goals per game. The Huskies have scored at least two goals in all but one game this season – the Beanpot consolation game on Feb. 12 vs. BC.
• Vermont (2nd) and Northeastern (3rd) boast two of the top three penalty killing units in the NCAA this season. The Catamounts have killed 90.2% of their opponents' power-plays, while the Huskies have negated 89.8% of their opponents' power-plays.
• The Huskies lead the nation in goals scored during the final two minutes (18:00 - 20:00) of a period with 27. No other team in the country has scored more than 22 total goals in the final two minutes of a period this season.
• Northeastern leads Hockey East and ranks fifth nationally with 38 goals scored during the first period. The Huskies are 20-1-1 this season when scoring first and 14-2-1 when leading after the first period.
• Freshman
Alina Mueller was named a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award on Feb. 21, as announced by USA Hockey. Mueller is the first freshman in program history (and the eighth player overall) to be named a top-10 candidate for the most prestigious individual award in the sport.
• Mueller continues to lead all WHEA freshmen in goals (19), assists (29), points (48), power-play points (14), game-winning goals (5), plus/minus (+29), shots on goal (118) and faceoff wins (326). Mueller has notched points in 29 of 33 games this season, including at least a point in all 10 games against ranked opponents.
• Mueller's 48 points make her Northeastern's highest-scoring rookie since the program joined Hockey East in 2002, as well as the third-highest scoring freshman in program history. Only Vicky Sunohara (78 points in 1988-89) and Stephanie Acres (49 points in 1996-97) have scored more points in their freshman seasons than Mueller.
• Mueller was named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday after a five-point weekend (2 goals, 3 assists) against Merrimack on Feb. 22-23. Mueller has now earned six WHEA weekly awards this season (four Rookie of the Week honors, two Player of the Week accolades), as well as three WHEA Rookie of the Month honors, and one National Rookie of the Month laurel.
• Senior goaltender
Brianna Storms was also honored by the league on Monday as the Defensive Player of the Week. Storms pitched a Senior Day shutout in her first collegiate start with 21 saves against Merrimack on Feb. 22.
• With Storms' award, all three NU goaltenders have now earned WHEA Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season:
Aerin Frankel on Oct. 8, Oct. 29 and Dec. 3;
Brittany Bugalski on Oct. 15; and Storms on Feb. 25.
• Sophomore goaltender
Aerin Frankel is 4-0-0 with a 1.25 GAA and a .951 save percentage in her career in the Hockey East playoffs. Frankel has not allowed more than two goals in any of her four WHEA postseason starts.
• Frankel's .804 winning percentage (17-3-3) ranks as the top mark among Hockey East netminders and the fourth-best mark in the NCAA this season. Frankel's 1.83 GAA ranks second among league goaltenders, while her .932 save percentage places her third among Hockey East shot-stoppers.
• Sophomore
Skylar Fontaine is one of three defenders in the nation with 10 or more goals this season, joining BC's Megan Keller (18) and Robert Morris' Emily Curlett (11). With 28 points in 33 games, Fontaine ranks second in the NCAA in scoring among blue-liners.
• Fontaine (28 points) and her defense partner, sophomore
Brooke Hobson (25 points), rank second and third in Hockey East scoring among defenders. Hobson's 10 power-play assists are tied for the league lead among blue-liners, while Fontaine's +37 rating is the best mark among WHEA defenders.
• Sophomore
Veronika Pettey leads the Huskies and is tied for second nationally with seven power-play goals this season. Pettey scored her first collegiate hat trick in her last game against Vermont, a 5-1 Northeastern win on Jan. 26 at Matthews Arena.
• Senior
Kasidy Anderson scored her 50th collegiate goal in Northeastern's 6-3 win over Merrimack on Feb. 8. Anderson is the 22nd player in program history to reach the milestone and first since
McKenna Brand last season.
• Both Anderson and senior
Tori Sullivan are approaching 100 points for their careers. Anderson has 97 points in 145 games, while Sullivan has 97 points in 150 games at both NU and BC.
• Freshman
Chloe Aurard ranks second among WHEA rookies with 28 points this season. Of those 28 points, 26 have come in league play.
• Aurard has also shown a tendency to score in big situations, potting the game-tying goal with 1:21 remaining in the third period of a 5-4 OT win against BC on Nov. 27, as well as the game-tying goal with 1:36 remaining in the third period of a 2-1 OT victory at UConn on Feb. 1.
• Junior
Andrea Renner scored her 10th goal of the season on Feb. 22 against Merrimack to become the sixth NU player with double-digit goals this season. Northeastern is one of only three teams in the nation to have at least six players with 10 or more goals, joining Minnesota (7) and Boston College (6).
• Freshman
Miceala Sindoris notched her first collegiate goal (the eventual game-winning goal) on Feb. 8 against Merrimack. Sindoris is the 15th different Husky to score this season and the 12th different player to score a game-winning goal for NU in 2018-19.
