CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 3 Northeastern women's hockey team came up just short in the opening round of the 2019 Beanpot against No. 8 Boston University, falling 2-1 in a shootout following a 3-3 tie before a crowd of 1,152 at Harvard's Bright-Landry Center on Tuesday evening.

Northeastern (20-3-4) and Boston University (15-6-7) traded goals through three periods of evenly-matched hockey as the Huskies took the lead three times (1-0, 2-1 and 3-2), only for the Terriers to answer on each occasion.

Freshman Alina Mueller opened her Beanpot account with a goal and an assist, as well as the go-ahead shootout goal in the second round of the tiebreaker.

Sophomore Aerin Frankel (25 saves) denied the first two BU shootout attempts, before Nara Elia scored on the Terriers' third attempt to extend the shootout to a fourth round. After Veronika Pettey was stopped by BU's Corinne Schroeder (31 saves), the Terriers claimed the shootout win when Reagan Rust sniped the top corner of the net to send BU to the final.

Sophomore Skylar Fontaine opened the scoring at 11:28 of the first period when she whacked home a rebound following a Mia Brown shot to extend her point streak to six straight games.

BU's Mackenna Parker tied it early in the second, before Pettey gave NU the lead back at 6:50 of the frame with her NCAA-leading sixth power-play goal of the year. The goal also marked the sixth straight game against BU in which Pettey has scored.

After Sammy Davis brought the Terriers level once again midway through the second, Mueller restored Northeastern's lead at 3-2 just 17 seconds into the third period following a centering pass from senior Kasidy Anderson.

Once again BU had an answer, however, as Jesse Compher tied the game less than two minutes later to round out the scoring.

The Huskies will return to action on Friday against Merrimack at Matthews Arena at 7 p.m.
