CONWAY, S.C. – Competing during a rare neutral-site game against its New England rival on Friday, the Northeastern baseball team lost a closely contested ballgame against Connecticut, 7-4, during the opening game of the 2019 CCU Baseball Tournament, as hosted by Coastal Carolina at Springs Brooks Stadium.

Jake Farrell answered UConn's two-run first inning with a solo home run during his first-inning plate appearance, taking Jeff Kersten's 1-0 delivery beyond the right field fence. Farrell's swing marked one of his two hits and one of only two run-scoring hits that Northeastern (4-3) produced against Kersten, who struck out four NU batters across six and two-thirds innings pitched.

After Connecticut (4-3) had extended its lead to 3-1 through two and a half innings, the Huskies staged a two-out rally during the bottom of the third inning to level the game at 3-3.

Cam Walsh and Scott Holzwasser earned back-to-back walks against Kersten before Farrell was pegged with a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Defending his CAA Rookie of the Week title, Corey DiLoreto drove the game-tying, two-RBI single up the middle, extending his career-opening hitting streak to seven consecutive games.

Connecticut moved in front, 4-3, courtesy of Conor Moriarty's fourth-inning RBI single prior to plating another two runs during the top of the fifth inning. John Toppa doubled in a run to end David Stiehl's morning while Christian Fedko singled a second run home against Brian Rodriguez.

Jeff Costello belted a leadoff single and double for Northeastern during the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, although the Huskies were unable to bring the sophomore outfielder around to score. NU traded runs with UConn during the ninth inning with Spenser Smith scoring on John Mazza's sacrifice fly.
