BOCA RATON, Fla. – Ian Fair's solo home run three pitches into Sunday's series finale at Florida Atlantic was unable to stand for nine innings as the Northeastern baseball team lost its pitchers' duel against the Owls, 2-1, at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

Leading off the ballgame, Fair rocketed Mike Ruff's 2-0 delivery off the scoreboard in right field, circling the bases for the second time during as many games. Fair's homer marked the first of five hits for the Huskies on Sunday and one of their only two extra-base knocks, which included Ryan Solomon's fifth-inning double.

Sean Mellen pitched effectively for Northeastern (5-9), logging his third scoreless start of the 2019 season despite being limited to five innings per his 103 pitches thrown. Mellen kept Florida Atlantic (9-7) to three hits despite issuing three walks, earning his lone strikeout of the day three batters into the first inning.

Following Fair's leadoff homer, the Huskies had trouble connecting against Ruff, who retired 13 consecutive NU batters before Solomon's third double of the season. Ruff closed his pitching line with five strikeouts and no walks across seven innings of work.

Josh Winkler tossed a scoreless sixth inning behind Mellen's departure but was swapped for Sam Jacobsak during the seventh inning in the wake of Mitchell Hartigan's leadoff double. With runners at the corners, Jacobsak surrendered the game-tying RBI single to Eric Rivera, two batters before Francisco Urbaez hit the go-ahead, RBI double to the left field corner that put the Owls in front, 2-1.

Cam Walsh singled to start Northeastern's eighth-inning comeback effort, but was caught stealing on his way into scoring position. Zach Schneider retired the Huskies in order during the ninth inning, collecting the three-out save.
