CHARLESTON, S.C. – Paced by 21 points from
Jordan Roland in his CAA Tournament debut, the Northeastern men's basketball team (21-10) never trailed en route to an 80-59 victory over UNCW (10-23) in the conference quarterfinals Sunday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Northeastern, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advances to the CAA Semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, where they will face College of Charleston game on Monday night at 8:30 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network.
Roland led three Huskies in double-figures on an 8-of-13 shooting night (5-of-10 from beyond the arc), while
Vasa Pusica (16 points on 4-of-9 shooting and seven assists) and
Bolden Brace (17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, 4-of-5 from three) also reached double-digits. Brace also added a team-high eight boards and a game-high three steals, tying a career-high.
Sunday saw the return of junior
Shawn Occeus (five points, two rebounds) and sophomore
Tomas Murphy (four points), who came off the bench after missing the previous nine and two games, respectively.
The Huskies were tasked with shutting down UNCW senior Devontae Cacok throughout the night, who finished with 21 points and a game-high 13 boards, including 14 points in the first half alone, to lead the Seahawks. Jeantal Cylla also reached double figures with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go along with five boards.
The Huskies took advantage of 10 straight UNCW misses early in the first half used an 11-0 run to bolt out to a 17-4 lead, its largest lead of the half, with seven of those coming from Pusica. The Seahawks, though, closed the half making seven of their last nine shots of the half to cut the deficit to 11 despite the Huskies finishing the half making three of its last four field goals to lead at the half, 39-28. Cacok was red hot in the opening 20 for UNCW, finishing the half with 14 on 7-of-11 shooting.
Northeastern came out firing in the second half, though, starting on an 8-1 run to open the game up and force an early Seahawk timeout. NU kept the pressure on throughout the half as
Jason Strong came off the bench and dropped nine points in the final 20 minutes as Northeastern pulled away late.
