N. CHARLESTON, S.C.– The Northeastern men's basketball team is back in the CAA Championship for the second-straight season and looking for the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament when the Huskies face off against the Pride Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
Each of the teams came away with the victory on their home courts earlier this season, Hofstra used a 42-point game and a buzzer beating three from Justin Wright-Foreman to come away with a win over the Huskies in January while Northeastern trounced Hofstra 75-61 at Matthews Arena at the beginning of February.
The two teams will meet for just the second-time ever in the CAA Tournament and the first time since the 2009-10 season, a quarterfinal double OT victory in favor of the Huskies.
Here is what you need to know about Tuesday's championship game:
THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
- XV of XVII
- Northeastern has been on a tear as of late winning 15 of their last 17 games and seven-straight at home to close out the Matthews and regular season
- After starting the conference season 1-2 with a victory over Drexel to begin the CAA year, followed by a couple tough losses to Delaware and Hofstra, the Huskies went on to win their next four games before faltering to a bruising Towson squad
- Northeastern bounced back later that weekend with a decisive victory over James Madison, and then captured a revenge win over Hofstra on Saturday followed by Thursday night's season sweep of William & Mary
- 12 of the Huskies' 14 conference victories came by double-digits and Northeastern averaged a 15.4 margin of victory in conference play
- In their last three games, the Huskies have averaged a 16.0 margin of victory, eerily similar to last season

vs. UNCW (79-52) |
- Overall, in 2018-19, when holding their opponent to under 70 points the Huskies are 14-0
- Dogs vs. Cats
- Hofstra enters Tuesday night's championship game with the Huskies on a four-game win-streak, winning eight of the Pride's last 10
- Hofstra has posted a 27-6 record this season and is 2-0 at neutral sites, both wins coming in the CAA Tournament
- The Pride only fell three times in conference play this season, one of those losses coming against the Huskies back at the beginning of February
LEADING THE WAY
- Hofstra senior guard and CAA Player of the Year Justin Wright-Foreman continues his stellar senior season and the team with a 27.0 ppg average, which ranks second in the nation, while also dishing out 96 assists
- Coupling with Wright-Foreman to provide one of the top scoring duos in the country is Eli Pemberton who is putting up 15.4 ppg this year
- Desure Buie is averaging 10.7 ppg in 2018-19 while dishing out a team-high 174 assists this season
ALL-TIME SERIES
- This will be the 46th meeting between the two teams in a series that the Huskies lead 23-22
- Hofstra took the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season on a buzzer beater that Justin Wright-Foreman threw up with a prayer as time expired
- But, the Huskies avenged that victory, with a decisive 14-point win at Matthews Arena ending the Pride's nation-leading 16-game win-streak
LAST TIME VS. HOFSTRA
- Controlling the game from start to finish, Northeastern ended the nation's longest win-streak with a 75-61 victory over Hofstra on Feb. 2
- With the win, the Huskies avenged Hofstra's buzzer-beating victory from early January, while also putting a halt to the Pride's 16-game win-streak and handing them their first CAA loss of the year
- Vasa Pusica led the way from start to finish, finishing with a game-high 24 points while pulling down eight rebounds and making two steals and was 8-for-10 from the free throw line on the night
- Donnell Gresham stepped up big time finishing with 18 points while knocking down four 3-pointers and adding five boards
- Gresham drew the assignment against Hofstra point guard Justin Wright-Foreman and held the senior, who entered the game averaging 26.0 ppg, third best in the nation, to just 15 points
- Desure Buie led the way for the Pride with 22 points, while Eli Pemberton chipped in nine.
- This Week For the Huskies
- Northeastern started the tournament off in decisive fashion picking up a 21-point wire-to-wire victory over UNCW in the CAA Quarterfinal round
- With the 80-59 win over the Seahawks, the Huskies moved on to the CAA Semis for the sixth time in the last seven seasons
- The 21-point win was also the second-largest of the season for Northeastern.... the first? The Huskies' regular season finale against Drexel (24 points)
- Leading the way was junior Jordan Roland who finished with 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting from deep while Vasa Pusica added 16 points, 7 assists and six rebounds and Bolden Brace had 17 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals
- The Seahawks were once again led by Devontae Cacok who finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds
- Monday night's contest with Charleston was the complete opposite with eight ties and 17 lead changes in the Semifinal round as the Huskies avenged last year's CAA Championship with a 70-67 victory over Charleston
- Shawn Occeus, back in just his second game after returning from injury, put up 17 points, while holding All-CAA First Teamer Grant Riller to just 10 points on the night
- With the Huskies trailing 65-64 with less than 40 seconds to play, Pusica took things upon himself, driving to the bucket for the lay-in despite All-CAA First Team selection Jarrell Brantley on his back to put NU ahead by a point
- Pusica and Donnell Gresham sealed the victory making their free throws down the stretch, while staving off a late foul call to earn the victory
